Learn to Ride a Bike

Dix Park is the site of one of the most exciting new park projects in America. The 308-acre site blends historic architecture and rich landscapes into a unique destination in the heart of Raleigh, North Carolina. Admission free programs and events are made possible through the generous donors  of the Dix Park Conservancy. An all-ages, bike skill program for gaining the skills to ride a bike without the use of training wheels.

Gipson Play Plaza at Dix Park

An all-ages, bike skill program for gaining the skills to ride a bike without the use of training wheels. In a safe and fun environment, participants learn the first lesson for riding a bicycle: How To Balance. Participants are provided with a Balance Bike (a bicycle without pedals or training wheels), helmet, and an instructor to learn the basic skills that build confidence and knowledge for riding a bicycle. Participants are welcome to bring their own helmet and bike which will be converted into a balance bike for the program. Come on out to this fun, free program hosted by Oaks and Spokes' Safe Routes To School Program Coordinator. Registration is required. This event is held in partnership with Oaks and Spokes, a non-profit dedicated to transforming Raleigh into a city where walking and biking are safe, accessible, and integral to everyday life. Oak and Spokes will have a bike mechanic on site to prepare personally-owned bicycles into Balance Bikes by removing training wheels and bike pedals. These items are restored on the bicycle. <h3>Tickets</h3>While free to attend, space is limited. On weekdays after 5pm and weekends, all lots are available for public parking. This increase will likely affect parking availability throughout the entire park. Parking is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Nearby parking cannot be guaranteed. <h3>Weather</h3>If we need to postpone or cancel due to inclement weather, we will communicate through Eventbrite email. Staff has the right to cancel programs onsite if severe weather impacts the class or poses a safety risk. <h3>Restrooms</h3>Outdoor programs are located at various places throughout the entire park. There are temporary restrooms located at the Big Field, Flowers Field, Magnolia Room, Oak Room, and by the Dog Park. Accessible temporary restrooms are located at the Big Field and Flowers Field. Indoor accessible restrooms are available at Gipson Play Plaza, under the Superintendent’s House at the Stone Houses and at the Chapel during hours of operation. <h3>Accessibility</h3>Dix Park continues to strive to be accessible and welcoming for visitors, including those with disabilities. Currently, portions of Dix Park, including some areas where programs and events occur, have uneven surfaces and are not fully accessible. Accessibility is a primary focus for early park improvements and all future planning and development.Parking: Accessible parking spaces are available in all lots.Restrooms: Accessible temporary restrooms are located at the Big Field and Flowers Field. I hereby irrevocably authorize the City of Raleigh, the Dix Park Conservancy, and program partners to edit, alter, copy, exhibit, publish, or distribute these photos for any lawful purpose.I have read this release thoroughly and understand that by registering for this program I am waiving legal rights.
