Bamboo Ridge Press: Hawai‘i's longest running, independent, literary small press is a nonprofit, tax-exempt corporation formed in 1978 to foster the appreciation, understanding, and creation of literary, visual, and performing arts by, for, or about the people of Hawai‘i and the Pacific. The organization is funded by book sales, subscriptions, and individual donors, and grants.

Askance is a generative writing jam featuring Bamboo Ridge Press author Donald Carreira Ching (Blood Work and Other Stories) that invites you to enter story crafting through unusual angles, surprising voices, and tilted POV.We’ll explore askance as a practice—reimagining voice and structure through playful, low-stakes experiments and prompts. Whether you're drafting something new or returning to a story, this session is for writers of all levels seeking momentum, surprise, or just a different way of seeing into story writing.This is a safe, creative space to fracture the framework of dominant narratives and have fun crafting new things together. He earned his PhD in English from the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. In 2015, his novel Between Sky and Sea: A Family’s Struggle was published by Bamboo Ridge Press. In 2017, he was awarded the Elliot Cades Award for Literature. He is an Assistant Professor of Writing at Leeward Community College and recently completed a near-future eco-thriller, Hawaii 2038: The Bitter Storms.
