Welcome to the Say Their Names Juneteenth Celebration!Come join us for a day of remembrance and celebration at 2788 Lamar Ave. This in-person event will honor the past and celebrate the future. Let's come together to Say Their Names and commemorate the significance of Juneteenth."Say Their Names Monuments" is an exhibit dedicated to preserving and sharing the lives of those stolen by the system.This is an event to honor those of the past, distance and recent, while also gathering resources for the present and future! How can we say their name if we don't know them? By accumulating resources for archive and documentation work, finding information about yourself and family members has been made simple and prioritized!"A commemoration and education event honoring Phillip Hatley, who was killed by Memphis police officers in 1939. His family, many of whom still live in Memphis, recently became aware of the details of his death thanks to research by the Civil Rights &amp; Restorative Justice Project. The Hatley family wants to also recognize the continuum of police brutality to present day by creating space for families to honor their loved ones with temporary monuments. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn how police brutality connects to systemic injustice in Memphis and beyond and ways to take action and be part of solutions." - Say Their NamesExtravaganza of the Century! We are mid-decade with the question, “What do we do now?” As efforts over the past 100 years have seemed to creep into action, this time period is about radical action. Utilizing communication, technology, and skill sets for community building, we are spearheading the finalization of ancestors’ work from years past.BLM Grassroots Memphis, Say Their Names Monuments, Institute for Public Service Reporting, CRRJ Civil Rights and Restorative Justice Project of Northeastern University School of Law, and BRP Black Reparations Project at Mills College Northeastern University and U.C. Berkeley’s Goldman School of Public Policy have ALL partnered up for a series of events that was shown to the Phillip Hatley Family in 2024. Here in 2025, the family has partnered with the entities to collectively assist the effort of social justice.The specific justice is for slave descendants, in particular, those who experienced traumatic life altering situations due to racism. Phillip Hatley was a WWI veteran who was killed in his home by two drunk white off-duty police officers, after they harassed several other members of the neighborhood. Phillip Hatley was a targeted individual in this scenario, as he posed no direct threat to the officers to warrant gunshot wounds as he ran away. Phillip Hatley was the son of freed slaves, Sam and Rachel Hatley, and was registered to vote when he was killed.Willie Mae (Phillip’s wife) and James (Phillip’s brother), along with Willie Mae’s three remaining children (Alma, Robert, and Eugene) all pursued efforts of justice, including: a rally and fundraising project of $1,000 on Beale Street in 1939 (equivalent to $22,000 in 2025), partnering with various journalists and ministers for community engagement, participating in the unfair trial of the murderous police officers, and James Hatley’s esteemed letter to the presidential office of Franklin D. Roosevelt — which got a response from his assistant office.As seen, the Hatley family was extremely active to bring awareness and justice, so the legacy continues as this lost information has now been brought to the attention of the living descendants.Juneteenth weekend, June 21st at 10am, the Hatleys and other families will be live and in person to bring national awareness and opportunities to families who suffered the same fate and entities who can assist and affect change. The event will be at the Harriet Performing Arts Center located at 2788 Lamar Ave, Memphis, TN 38114. Agenda

There is an art competition that you can enter NOW! Entry fee is only $25 and the grand prize is $100!!! Simply enter your art into our form to have your spot submitted in the competition by June 7th. Winner and runners up have the option to participate in other forms of recognition, leading to innovation within our causes. For example, political figures can choose art designs to display in public areas in the city. The Hatley Family is writing a book and can feature your art within the text as well. If these opportunities are what you are looking for, mention that in your sign up form. Otherwise, the competition will be held as usual towards the end of the event! Maybe you don't want to share art in the competition, but you still have a message and would like to interact with the exhibit artistically! Feel free to download a Zine, fold it, and bring it to the show to showcase your message with others. Zines are also encouraged for our art competitors to download ahead of time as well! Maybe you have a sketch, and poem, and graphic that you'd like to share around the exhibit. You, of course, have the option to take your Zine home or leave it with us! We encourage you to share your art on social media to spread the word about our event as well. This is a time for us to come together for the purpose of providing solutions while supporting each other. Share your story with a Zine, and we'll be sure to recognize it with you!
