Cai Guo-Qiang: A Material Odyssey is a journey through the artist’s four-decade career creating paintings and drawings with an explosive material: gunpowder. Cai embraces the unpredictable energy of gunpowder to bridge the gap between what he describes as the “seen and unseen” world.

Rachel Rivenc is a conservator, technical art historian and conservation scientist. She is currently the Head of Conservation and Preservation at the Getty research Institute (GRI). She authored the book The Artist’s Materials : Cai Guo-QIang. She was the lead curator for Cai Guo-Qiang: A Material Odyssey. She also authored the book Made in Los Angeles: Materials, Processes, and the Birth of West Coast Minimalism.
