A Blueswoman Matters: Book Talk/ "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom" Movie Review

From adolescent runaway, to Single Mom to award winning academic, Dr. Akbar earned a Ph.D. and university tenure while raising her two children alone.Dr. Akbar is a dynamic change agent who facilities transformation from small classrooms to entire communities. Dr. Akbar is an award winning playwright and performance studies scholar with more than 10 years teaching, writing and producing experience. As a producer/director, she performs on a "playground" of scholarship, performance and activism.

Dr. Maisha Akbar shares her book “Preaching the Blues” (Routledge, 2019), tying the anti lynching play tradition to  blueswoman performance.

<p>Join us for a cutting edged discussion which reviews the Netflix movie, &quot;Ma Rainey&#x27;s Black Bottom,&quot; within the framework of Dr. Akbar&#x27;s book. In this book talk/ movie review, the blueswoman tradition is foregrounded through the cultural production of Black women including anti-lynching/rape activist, Ida B. Wells-Barnett, anti lynching playwrights as well as Gertrude &quot;Ma&quot; Rainey.  </p>
