<h3>Allegheny County Health Department's Upcoming COVID-19 Awareness Campaign for Ethnic and Minority Communities </h3>The Allegheny County Health Department (ACHD) and Department of Human Services have commissioned MEE Productions Inc. to develop and execute a COVID-19 media campaign and community engagement initiative focused on supporting ethnic and minority communities in Allegheny County that have been disproportionately affected by COVID-19. We are pleased to collaborate with respected Pittsburgh community leader, Reverend Dr. John Welch, who has a PhD in healthcare ethics and for the past 15 years has been organizing faith communities. Dr. Welch, who will convene an inclusive Community Advisory Board, will partner with MEE Productions in this much-needed culturally relevant outreach effort.MEE Productions Inc. (www.meeproductions.com), a minority-owned firm, is a leading expert in behavioral health communications and social marketing and has three decades of first-hand experience working on health disparities and public health issues affecting underserved and under-resourced communities across America. MEE develops and implements health interventions that “move the numbers” in communities with the highest health disparities in the U.S. – low-income, urban, Black and Latinx communities. MEE has designed and implemented successful, direct-to-consumer health campaigns at both the city/county and statewide level.About the Upcoming Campaign for Ethnic and Minority PopulationsMEE will create a campaign for Allegheny County that melds the latest digital technology with the community’s “human-ology.” Together, these online and offline (in-person and community-based) engagements will increase awareness and create positive word-of-mouth. The community engagement process MEE will implement in Allegheny County will build upon and leverage existing relationships with trusted community partners, nonprofits, faith leaders, barbershops, beauty salons, and other “out-front” organizations, including federally-qualified health centers (FQHCs). We will nurture long-term connections with community-identified leaders at the ground level.In effect, they will become our most credible communications channel, trusted senders of COVID-19 prevention messages and bridges to overcome the deep-seated barrier of community mistrust. We will provide campaign training to these community-identified leaders, then empower them with digital toolkits, user-friendly videos and other materials to help spread the word.An Inclusive Approach to Campaign DevelopmentMEE will use a unique approach to develop this campaign. New COVID-19 messages will reflect the worldview of underserved minority residents of Allegheny County because they will be based on their lived experiences and day-to-day realities. There is no one-size-fits-all message in this situation. Therefore, we will use a “by-and-for-the-audience” creative process that leads to doable and shareable messages that makes the kinds of health changes we are asking for (like accessing available COVID-19 testing) sustainable in the context of economically-challenged and stressed-out lives.Messages to Move Communities Beyond Pandemic Survival ModeWhile we must get as many Allegheny County residents as possible to engage in behaviors that protect others (like wearing masks, and physical/social distancing), what makes this campaign unique is that it also includes messages about how residents in low-resourced communities can sustain and protect themselves for the longer-haul by engaging in daily wellness practices and tapping into their resilience to manage stress/anxiety and thrive even in these trying times.We Need Your Organization’s Involvement to Be SuccessfulMEE would love for you to be part of the process of addressing the hard work ahead in Allegheny County – primary prevention, equity and social-justice conversations that put certain communities at higher risk for COVID-19 and multiple other negative outcomes. We always welcome collaborations with like-minded, committed community leaders and organizations who see the value in culturally-specific approaches engaging communities that are too often overlooked and underserved.Valuing Community Engagement with Two-Way DialogueMEE understands that the challenges of responding to the evolving COVID pandemic means that multiple conversations must take place so later this month, MEE and Rev. Welch will be hosting a series of virtual listening and information sessions (MEE calls them “Chat &amp; Chews”) to bring key community leaders and stakeholders to the table. These grassroots leaders are the real “experts” on what kind of COVID-19 information their community needs and what barriers residents have faced in getting services and staying safe. We will be sharing information about the upcoming campaign’s intent and desired outcomes, and then listen to how all sectors of the community can get engaged as an active partner.
