Invisible Communities and the Places We Ignore: A Writing Workshop

Funded by the U.S. Department of Education, theInstitute for Regional and International Studies National Resource Center(IRIS NRC) supports and enhances global awareness and inspires informed thinking about the complexities of our world.We provide resources and expertise to K-12 and post-secondary educators, students and the community at large. Working in collaboration with campus, national, and international partners, IRIS NRC strives to put the Wisconsin Idea into action. IRIS International Book Club for K-12 teachers

Join us for a writing workshop with the author of <a href="https://www.mathangisubramanian.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">A People&#x27;s History of Heaven</a>, Mathangi Subramanian. The author will speak about using fiction and writing to explore gender, religion and culture in India and lead us through a close reading, pre-writing, and writing exercise, all of which will be ready for the classroom! &quot;In Heaven, a ramshackle slum in Bangalore, India, five girls forge an unbreakable bond. Muslim, Christian, and Hindu; queer and straight; they love and accept one another unconditionally. When the local government threatens to demolish Heaven to build a shopping mall, the girls and their mothers refuse to be erased. Together they wage war on the bulldozers sent to bury their homes, and, ultimately, on the city that wishes that they would remain hidden forever.&quot; Teachers should read <a href="https://www.mathangisubramanian.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">A People&#x27;s History of Heaven</a> before attending this online event. The novel <a href="https://www.mathangisubramanian.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">A People&#x27;s History of Heaven</a> was a finalist for the LAMBDA Literary Awards and the PFC - Valley of Words Awards, was longlisted for the Center for Fiction First Novel Prize and the PEN/Faulkner Award, and was named a Skipping Stones Honor Book. The first 40 Wisconsin K-12 public school teachers who register for this event will receive a copy of the book.This event is co-sponsored by Center for South Asia, UW-Madison.
