Evening at the Homestead: The plight of the endangered Smalltooth Sawfish

Founded in 1967, the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation’s mission is to protect and care for Southwest Florida's coastal ecosystems through its focus on Water Quality Research, Policy and Advocacy, Sea Turtles and Shorebirds, Native Landscaping, Habitat and Wildlife Management, and Environmental Education. SCCF is the largest private landowner on Sanibel Island. It manages 1,300 acres of land on Sanibel and Captiva and owns hundreds of additional acres in the Southwest Florida region. SCCF is proud to manage numerous public and non-public trails and preserves, a Native Landscape & Garden Center, Marine Laboratory, Sanibel Sea School, Coastal Watch volunteer program, and more.

Dr. Gregg Poulakis will discuss the Smalltooth Sawfish, why it became endangered,  and summarize his team’s research.

<p>Please join us for an engaging talk by Dr. Gregg Poulakis from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission's Fish and Wildlife Research Institute about the Smalltooth Sawfish.  The talk will be titled,  "<strong>Where have we been and where are we going?: the plight of the endangered Smalltooth Sawfish and what is being done to promote recovery in the US.</strong>"</p><p>Dr. Poulakis will discuss why the Smalltooth Sawfish became endangered, summarize his team’s research on juveniles in our local waters, and what the future holds for the species. The talk will include how use of state-of-the-art technology is helping to promote recovery of this unique species.</p><h2>About the speaker</h2><p>Dr. Poulakis has been a fish biologist with the State of Florida since 1997. For his entire career, he has been based out of the Charlotte Harbor Field Laboratory in Port Charlotte and has been dedicated to learning about the fishes of the Charlotte Harbor estuarine system. His work has ranged from documenting the fish species found within the harbor, to multi-species assessments of habitat use, to single-species research on habitat use, seasonality, and reproduction. These days, he spends most of his time running the state’s Sawfish Research Program.</p>
