The sketchbook has long been an essential laboratory for artists—a space for experimentation, exploration, and discovery. Over the centuries, its pages have captured new ideas, materials, and ways of thinking through drawing. In this workshop, we’ll use the sketchbook to break out of familiar habits and expand your creative range. If you find yourself repeating the same approaches or feeling stuck in routine, this is an opportunity to re-energize your practice. Through guided exercises, prompts, and playful challenges, you'll explore alternative techniques, experiment with unexpected tools, and learn new ways to engage with your sketchbook as a space for artistic growth. Whether you're looking to reconnect with drawing or push your work in new directions, this workshop will help you develop greater freedom, curiosity, and creative flexibility in your sketchbook practice. What you’ll explore and learn: - Using the sketchbook as a space for experimentation and creative risk-taking. - Mixed media techniques, including watercolor, Chinese ink, and wax from a special candle. - Integrating written notes and reflections to make your sketchbook more personal and meaningful. - Embracing intuitive and non-top-controlled drawing approaches. - Letting go of perfectionism to discover unexpected beauty in process-driven work. - Developing habits that foster openness, playfulness, and artistic growth. This workshop will meet at Castle Clinton in Battery Park at 10am on July 12th. As the day approaches, we will assess the weather and communicate via the email address you used to enroll. In the event of rain the workshop may convene at the waiting room of the Staten Island Ferry Terminal. The purchase price of tickets for this workshop will be refunded only if the event is cancelled. About the Instructor:Mario Linhares has a B.A. in Design, an M.A. in Visual Arts Education and a Ph.D. in Fine Arts, with a specialization in Drawing. He is a professor in Lisbon and belongs to the Fine Arts Research Center and Studies at the University of Lisbon. Linhares started Urban Sketchers Portugal in 2009, joined the International Executive Board of Urban Sketching in 2011 and served as the nonprofit’s Education Director until 2019. Linhares is the author of several books, articles and essays, contributes drawings to exhibitions and delivers lectures worldwide.
