Abolitionist Universities: Organizing in and against Education

Cops Off Campus Research Collective

In this, the third and final of the collaborative webinars between the UC Cops Off Campus Coalition and Critical Resistance, scholars and organizers will converge to share knowledge, experience, and strategy about organizing for abolition in universities and against them. This generative tension of abolitionist work—in which we fight to unmake and remake, destroy and cultivate the means of education—presents particular problems for those who work to enliven other possibilities. What tools do we need to develop , what habits do we need to form, and what relationships do we need to build in order to diagnose and to sever the links between education, policing, and the prison-industrial complex more broadly? What struggles, past and present, do we draw upon in order to do so? What does the explicit introduction of abolitionist goals or campaigns do to shift, complicate, and recalibrate organizations and struggles that haven&#x27;t always been conducted within anti-policing and anti-carceral parameters?This webinar brings together scholar-organizers and folks involved in one of several in-motion organizing projects to help answer these questions, and consider how to inhabit them generatively.Participants:Audrey Beard (they/she) is a researcher and software engineer living in Brooklyn. They&#x27;ve worked with students at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and City University of New York to collect, analyze, and organize around data about campus policing. She joined the Cops Off Campus Research Project in June.Blu Buchanan (Sociology, University of California, Davis)Yulia Gilich (she/they) is a media artist, scholar, and community organizer. They are a PhD candidate in the Department of Film and Digital Media at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Their work is primarily concerned with the use of settler colonization in larger imperial projects, particularly those of the United States and Israel.Sandy Grande is a Professor of Political Science and Native American and Indigenous Studies at the University of Connecticut with affiliations in American Studies, Philosophy, and the Race, Ethnicity and Politics program. Her research and teaching interfaces Native American and Indigenous Studies with critical theory toward the development of more nuanced analyses of the colonial present. She was recently awarded the Ford Foundation, Senior Fellowship (2019-2020) for a project on Indigenous Elders and aging. In addition to her academic and organizing work, she has provided eldercare for her parents for over ten years and remains the primary caregiver for her 92-yr. old father. Damien Sojoyner (he/him) is an Associate Professor of Anthropology at UC Irvine and board member of the Southern California Library. He works on the relationship between schools and prisons in California.(Anthropology, University of California, Irvine)Moderator:Nick Mitchell studies and teaches about universities, political economy, gender, and race. Nick gets paid to do so as a tenured employee of the University of California, Santa Cruz.
