<h1>Join us for our very first virtual Vintage Camera Day!</h1>On November 14th, we will host live lectures from photo historians Katherine Manthorne &amp; Daile Kaplan.<h2>SCHEDULE</h2><h3>1PM - 2PM</h3>Join Art historian Katherine Manthorne for a live lecture followed by an opportunity forQ&A:Sitting for a Woman Photographer in the 1860sImagine yourself back in the 1860s. You want to have your portrait taken. You go to the studio of Matilda Moore on Canal Street in New York City. This illustrated presentation recreates a visit to one of the hundreds of woman photographers who worked across the United States in those early days. We follow each stage of the experience: arriving in the waiting room, being arranged in the posing chair, being “shot” by Mrs. Moore operating the old box camera, and picking up your picture.Katherine Manthorne is on the Art History faculty of the Graduate Center of City University of New York. Prior to that she was Director of the Research Center at Smithsonian's American Art Museum. Researching American visual culture, she saw a need to highlight the role of women. Her book Film and Modern American Art: The Dialogue between Cinema and Painting (Routledge, available in paperback, 2020) featured women of the silent movie era. Two new books continue that focus including Restless Enterprise: The Art and Life of Eliza Pratt Greatorex (U. of California Press, 2020). More pertinent to this lecture is Women in the Dark: American Female Photographers 1850-1900 (Schiffer Publishing, 2020). She lives in New York with her husband James Lancel McElhinney and their cat Maeve.<h3>2:30 PM - 3:30 PM</h3>Daile Kaplan will make a special presentation of her pop-photographia collection.Pop-photographica is a term Kaplan coined to describe 3-dimensional objects adorned with photographic images. Kaplan will highlight objects in her collection to discuss the intersections of popular culture and photography. Followed by a live Q&A discussionDaile Kaplan is a champion of all things photographic. She is a collector of decorative and functional objects highlighted with photographs. She has been the Photographs specialist on PBS’ popular tv program, Antiques Roadshow, since 2000, and she’s the author of books about Lewis W. Hine, and a certified appraiser of Photographs and Photobooks. From 1990-2020, she was Vice President and Director of Photographs &amp; Photobooks at Swann Auction Galleries, NY, where she has organized 90 sales, sold more than 60,000 classical, contemporary and vernacular photographs and photobooks, and set numerous world auction records.She has lectured extensively about collecting for the Appraisers Association of America, the American Museum of Folk Art, the Grolier Club, the Ephemera Society, New York University, Boston University, Maine Media Workshop and College, the New School, and Palm Beach Photographic Centre. And she’s taught visual thinking to NYC school children and pioneered an adult visual literacy program at the Center for Reading and Writing, in NYC.A longstanding collector, she coined the term “pop photographica” to describe a new genre of 3-d photo objects reflecting the convergence of photography and popular culture: clothing, jewelry, furniture, souvenirs, curios, household items and contemporary multiples. Works from her collection have been exhibited at the Les Rencontres d’Arles, the Morgan Library and Museum, the Museum of Art and Design, the Art Gallery of Ontario, and the Parrish Art Museum. The technique was invented in 1841 by Sir JohnHerschel and was popularised by photographer and botanist Anna Atkins.
