Making the decision to follow the formal management path can be a very rewarding, yet challenging experience.   Management roles are typically full of growth opportunities that require the individual to learn and develop new skills and approaches to be successful.Too many outstanding individual contributors who make wonderful contributions to the organization with their technical knowledge and skill make the mistake of thinking that the formal management path is the road to fame, fortune, and job satisfaction only to discover that their expectations did not line up with reality. They end up frustrated, dissatisfied, and in many cases leave the organization taking their institutional knowledge and experience with them. It is a tragedy—not only for them but for the organization as well!Others have developed the negative perception that management is for “ladder-climbers” and is full of unrewarding activities like dealing with difficult people, handling piles of paperwork, and having to let people go. These perceptions can lead an otherwise excellent candidate to avoid the leadership path.
