Some experiences are too much for a single nervous system to hold.Now more than ever, we need to support each other and our systems through our innate ability to co-regulate and release extra nervous system reactivity. Developing these skills builds our resiliency to meet and metabolize our experiences, protecting us against the cumulative effects of stress. Enter COLLECTIVE GROUND - 45 minute virtual sessions where we can practice Somatic Experiencing skills of orienting, grounding, vocal toning, movement and visualizations to help settle and ground our collective and individual nervous systems. WHAT TO EXPECTFew skills are more essential than the ability to settle your body. When you can settle your body, you are more likely to be calm, alert, and fully present, no matter what is going on around you. A settled body also enables you to harmonize and connect with other bodies around you—while encouraging them to settle as well. Learning to settle your body is not about reducing stress. It’s about increasing your body’s ability to manage stress. We can have cognitive awareness of the stress we live with and all the things that cause it to be- but we can’t simply think our way out of it- we need the body's help and participation. It's a bottom up process.Not all Nervous Systems are alike- if you’ve had prolonged periods of stress or trauma you might find that your system might do well with some tools and not respond to others. Just because a tool didn't work once doesn't mean that it will never work for you.If your system is sensitive - honor that. Less is always more with this work.GOALSCultivate embodied states of “alert &amp; calm” built from a felt sense of presence, safety and ease.Develop the ability to track our experience in the bodyDevelop the ability to notice down regulation also referred to as a shiftEstablish internal and external resources- places of refuge.Live more from a place of functional activation- engaged, present &amp; ready.Feel skilled and empowered to shift the physiological and emotional states we find ourselves in.Develop the ability to hold more activation in the body without becoming overwhelmed.WHAT DOES DOWN REGULATION FEEL/LOOK LIKE?The felt sense of a shift. A spontaneous deep breath and exhale. A sigh of relief.A shiver, or a part of your body moves or twitches.Feeling like you’re waking up, coming into presence, clearing out or feel like you’re “back”.THIS CLASS WILL BE EXPERIENTIALWe'll be doing exercises sitting, standing and lying down.You might want to have a yoga mat or a carpeted area to practice on.The Collective nature of it is intentional- all of our systems are coming together and supporting one another in the process.I'll be changing up the exercises from class to class- the intention is that we'll develop a tool box of sorts and perhaps out of that, some somatic sequences will emerge.We will do some work around distress tolerance- less is always more. Do not choose an example that would count as a nuclear option for you. On an emotional scale of 1-10, always choose something that's a 5 or below to work with so you can build the skill.Kathy Cherry teaches mindfulness and meditation classes, works 1:1 as spiritual mentor and is a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner in training. She also guides Breathwork groups.Having completed her Intermediate year of SE training and anticipating her final certification in Spring 2021 she's offering these group sessions on a sliding scale/donation basis as well as individual 1:1 SE sessions at reduced rates as part of her training.
