History of Laban: Past, Present, and Future

LIMS has been engaged in making people aware of the value of perceiving that being alive is being in movement. Through our programs, people acquire the knowledge of moving with greater consciousness and easiness and of understanding the connections between movement and its wealth of meanings.The Laban/Bartenieff Institute of Movement Studies, LIMS® is a non-profit educational organization, centered in New York City, with a global network of movement professionals.  Both in Manhattan and in our Brooklyn studios, we have been training movement teachers, choreographers, theater directors and coaches for forty years. Our international network includes over 1000 LIMS Certified Movement Analysts (CMAs) who work with Laban Movement Analysis and Bartenieff Fundamentals in diverse fields, making a difference in the way people perform, communicate, observe, learn, and negotiate. We are proud of the impact our CMAs on fields as diverse as the performing arts, sports, education, diplomacy, leadership studies, business and communications.From research on developmental movement and how they stay imprinted in the adult body to the observation of and commentary on political candidates, from the experience of everyday movement rituals to the staging of refined choreography and theater plays, from a neurophysiology-based movement program for people with Parkinson's to movement-based interventions with women in remote villages and large urban centers, from  conflict management to motion-capture projects, CMAs are making a profound difference globally.

In the first session, Bradley will present the evidence for and against the concerns about Laban&#x27;s personal history and writings. 2-3 CMAs will interrogate the evidence and we will discuss what we know, how we know it, and why it matters. The second class will address the recent (20 years) history of LIMS itself, its expansions, contractions, and shifts. And the third class will address some of the cutting edge research utilizing the LBMS material, including applications to technology, medicine, therapy, social justice, and cross-cultural practices. Special guest appearances from Forrestine Pauley, Cheryl Clark, Susan Wiesner, Carol-Lynne Moore, Miriam Phillips, and others. WhereOnline through LIMS Vimeo account.
