Who will be teaching this series?

Alexandria Bordas is an award-winning investigative journalist. She worked on the San Francisco Chronicle's Investigative Team from 2020-2023 to report on dozens of sexual assault allegations against a Sonoma County mayor. She's the Department Chair of Journalism at Cabrillo College.

What is the meaning behind Prior Restraint Media?

Accepted Answer

Prior Restraint is an attempt by the government to stop a story from running and it is the greatest threat to the First Amendment. The legal precedent case in our country involving prior restraint is Near v. Minnesota, 1931, when the Supreme Court made prior restraint illegal for the first time.

Will we be able to use the activities we do in this workshop on future applications?

Accepted Answer

Yes! This is one of the main takeaways from our programs -- having accessible, published clips from Prior Restraint Media to use in future applications. Having "clips", or published stories, in any media format is a surefire way to showcase your work. The website will be free with no paywall.

Question 4

Can I attend the program remotely?

Accepted Answer

Unfortunately there are no remote offerings at this time. Working together in-person is a critical component to our programs, so student reporters can work side-by-side with the teachers and their peers. It also gives Alexandria an opportunity to mentor students in-person.

Do I need prior experience to join?

Accepted Answer

No! We welcome students from all backgrounds and experience levels. Even if you've never explored the world of journalism or storytelling, you're welcome to join us.
