Virtual Town Hall: Future of Juvenile Justice in Prince William

As our understanding around trauma-based care and rehabilitation evolves, so must policies and facilities  in Prince William.

A panel discussion with:<ul><li>Supervisor Kenny Boddye, Occoquan District PWC </li><li>Jeffrey S. Tierney, Director of Social Services Prince William County </li></ul>Historically, court-involved youth were treated much like adults, serving their sentences in prison-like settings, with little focus on providing the treatment and training that could help them successfully transition after release. During this town hall, hear how the Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) is using its Transformation Strategic Framework to break that paradigm, with a focus on diversion programs, trauma-informed treatment and education. The new new Juvenile Services Campus in Prince William would support these initiatives, with a homelike environment and detention alternatives that are more conducive to rehabilitation and reducing recidivism. Additionally, with fewer youth now entering into detention—<a href="https://rga.lis.virginia.gov/Published/2017/RD623/PDF" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">in 2017, 80% of Virginia court-involved youth were eligible for diversion plans</a>—the new facility would be smaller, potentially co-locating with counseling and additional services. Additional Background: The Virginia DJJ Transformation Strategic Framework, rooted in findings from <a href="https://www.aecf.org/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Annie E. Casey Foundation</a> assessments, consists of three core operational strategies as well as a strategy dedicated to sustaining, maintaining and evaluating reforms and progress meant to:<ul><li>Reduce safely the use of state operated Juvenile Correctional Centers by transforming intake, probation and commitment practices</li><li>Reform supervision, rehabilitation, and treatment practices for youth in custody and upon return home</li><li>Replace large outdated Juvenile Correctional Centers with a statewide continuum of evidenced -based services, alternative placements, and new smaller therapeutic correctional settings </li><li>Sustain the transformation by maintaining safe, healthy, inclusive workplaces; recruit, retain and develop highly skilled and motivated staff; continuously evaluate service delivery model/reentry services</li></ul>Learn more:<ul><li><a href="https://rfknrcjj.org/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Robert F.
