The Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition (MIRA) is the largest organization advocating for the rights and integration of immigrants and refugees across our Commonwealth. Founded in 1987, we serve more than 1 million foreign-born people through policy analysis and advocacy, institutional organizing, education and strategic communications.MIRA is powered by our 130+ members, including grassroots organizations; legal, social and health service providers; faith-based organizations, and civil and human rights advocacy groups.

The obstacles to naturalization, how MIRA’s Citizenship team helps, and why attaining citizenship has been so impactful.

Please join MIRA on December 1st for the third installment of our Fall Speaker Series of 2020. This virtual discussion will focus on reducing barriers to citizenship for individuals like our guest speaker, Delise.During this conversation, attorney Jessica Chicco will discuss the ins and outs of applying for citizenship. She will present the many obstacles permanent residents face when seeking to become citizens - including new changes to the civics test and attempts to increase fees and eliminate fee waivers - and how MIRA’s citizenship program can help. We will also hear from Delise Ramazani, a former MIRA client. Delise, who is originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo, will share the story of her own path to US citizenship and why attaining citizenship has been so meaningful to her and her family.Hosts&#x27; Bios: 1. Jess Chicco (she/her), Director of New Americans Initiatives at MIRA. She joined MIRA in January 2020 after more than a decade working with immigrants and immigrant communities. She oversees MIRA&#x27;s education and training programs and citizenship program, as well as federal policy issues. Prior to joining MIRA, she was the Senior Immigration Attorney at DOVE (Domestic Violence Ended, Inc.) in Quincy, where she represented immigrant survivors of domestic violence. She started her legal career as an associate attorney at Human Rights First’s Refugee Protection Program in New York, where she provided legal rights presentations to detained immigrants and co-authored a report on the detention of asylum seekers.2.
