The Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition (MIRA) is the largest organization advocating for the rights and integration of immigrants and refugees across our Commonwealth. Founded in 1987, we serve more than 1 million foreign-born people through policy analysis and advocacy, institutional organizing, education and strategic communications.MIRA is powered by our 130+ members, including grassroots organizations; legal, social and health service providers; faith-based organizations, and civil and human rights advocacy groups.

State budget advocacy ensures robust state investment in immigrant communities year after year. Whether supporting English classes for adult immigrants or funding outreach and services for immigrant survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, the state budget provides critical resources to our communities for inclusion, advancement, and protection. During the COVID-19 era, the work of MIRA, our member organizations, and our allies has been critical to ensuring that COVID-19 relief funds benefit our hardest-hit immigrant communities.MIRA also work closely with state legislators to annually defeat budget amendments that seek to exclude or harm immigrants. Immigrants contribute millions of dollars in taxes. MIRA's work, and the work of our members, ensures that the needs and priorities of immigrant state residents remain front and center.Hosts &amp; Panelists' Bios:1. Amy Grunder (she/her), Director of Legislative Affairs, leads MIRA's legislative advocacy for the Safe Communities Act and other state legislation promoting immigrant rights, education, health and safety.2. Hema Sarang-Sieminski (they/ them), Policy Director at Jane Doe Inc, the Massachusetts Coalition to End Sexual and Domestic Violence. Hema works closely with JDI members in advocating for funding and legislative and system change. Hema has worked with immigrant and other survivors of partner abuse and sexual violence for 20 years. Hema was named Best LGBTQ Lawyers Under 40 by the LGBT Bar Association. Hema received their BA from the University of Pennsylvania and their JD in 2005 from Northeastern University School of Law.About MIRA member, Jane Doe, Inc: JDI is the lead coalition advocating for the needs of survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault.
