Intro to Woodworking: Cutting Boards (Inclusion Series)

Gain confidence in your woodworking knowledge, and leave with a completed cutting board!

Our goal for this workshop is to learn safe basic woodworking skills and have fun while doing it! We will go over safe machine usage, how to select the right woods for your board, processing the lumber and finally finishing the project so you will have a board to take home and use! By the end of class, each student will be confident in their abilities to start their woodworking journey.Please wear close-toed shoes, full length pants, and no loose/dangly garments or jewelry. We will provide PPE like safety glasses, dust masks, etc. but you are welcome to bring your own. Otherwise, just bring yourself and be ready to have a good time!This is a 2-day workshop! Friday,May 3rd 2-6PM and Saturday, May 4th 9AM-1PM. You will need to attend both sessions to complete your project.Age 16+, under 18 MUST be accompanied by a guardian.This workshop is part of our "Inclusion" series where we invite anyone who may not feel comfortable using these tools to join us in the metal or wood shop (or both!), learn some new skills, and meet other people who are also new to this! All of our instructors for this series are prepared for complete beginners, we hope you will join us!

When I got married, my husband started learning from my grandfather, but I gradually realized that this was something I could do, too. I didn't have to rely on the men in the family to make the things I wanted - I could make them, too. And so I started helping my husband and gradually growing my skills until I could be independently woodworking myself and making the things I wanted to make. Now I see in wood beauty and character I'd never noticed before and found a side of myself that I'm loving to build and grow."Amy Ewing was a math teacher and now manages Data Science professionals at Eastman!

Agenda

Go over safety instructions, cut your wood, and glue up the cutting board! If we have extra time, we'll start on some demos for Day 2.

Day 1

Clean up your cutting board, sand the surface, route edges, and oil to finish!

Day 2
