Learn a different way to think about mapping and how these techniques can be used in your San Jose Story Maps. This FREE online workshop is open to all SJSU students. A Zoom link will be sent to you after registration.Join us for a free online workshop about deep mapping and virtual neighborhoods.Workshop Description:In these disorienting times, our sense of space has both stretched and shrunk — we’re attending meetings, classes, and happy hours spanning multiple time zones, yet doing it from the same spot in front of our computers. Can we visualize these virtual gatherings as new forms of spaces? Can we think of Zoomspace as a place?This 90-minute workshop explores the time-space of the video call as a form of temporary physical community — a pop-up neighborhood. Inspired by deep mapping — an approach to understanding place through experience and narrative — participants will be led through a short series of activities to discover the hyperlocal contours of this workshop’s Zoom call. We will record our observations in a collaborative document, and collectively explore what it might mean to be fully present despite the distancing effects of screens.In addition to receiving a digital copy of the collaborative document, participants can opt to receive a small, risograph-printed atlas of the pop-up neighborhood.This workshop has a few technical and physical requirements:<ul><li>This workshop takes place over Zoom. It’s free to sign up; please make sure the Zoom app is downloaded to your computer ahead of the workshop.</li><li>Cameras should be turned on for the duration of the workshop. Make sure you’re Zooming in from an environment you feel comfortable sharing on screen.</li><li>Physical activity: You will be asked to perform a small amount of movement — holding up your hand/arms at various angles, walking to another part of the room, etc.</li></ul>Other tools you’ll need: pen, paper, and a camera phoneJayme Yen is a graphic designer and design teacher. She often works with artists, museums, and arts nonprofits on books, exhibitions, collateral, and more. She is a co-founder of the Seattle Art Book Fair (launching 2021) and teaches design at the University of Washington School of Art + Art History + Design. Jayme also produces a small, infrequent (but fun) zine about language, called IDIOM.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------After the workshop students are encouraged to submit their finished designs to the <a href="https://projects.cadre.sjsu.edu/sjstorymap/wishyouwerehere/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Wish You Were Here Correspondence Exhibition Design Contest </a>(Nov 1 - Dec 6th). Wish You Were Here grew out of a series of brainstorming sessions with the Natalie &amp; James Thompson Gallery and faculty from Art &amp; Design departments at San Jose State University about ways to meaningfully connect the themes from the S<a href="https://projects.cadre.sjsu.edu/sjstorymap" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">an Jose Story Map</a> with the visual arts while Sheltering in Place. Wish You Were Here serves as way to collect multidisciplinary contributions of visual &amp; text based work focused on placemaking in San Jose with sub-themes of:<ul><li>Sheltering in Place</li><li>Sustainability</li><li>Cultural History</li><li>Generational Connectivity</li><li>Transformation </li></ul>About The <a href="https://projects.cadre.sjsu.edu/sjstorymap/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">San Jose Story Map</a> ProjectThe San Jose Story Map uses the power of stories to reveal San Jose in a new and different light. Contest entries must be original literary or artistic compositions relating to San Jose:<ul><li>Literary Entries 750 words max (any genre)</li><li>Photographs</li><li>Images of material work</li><li>Video</li><li>Audio/Sound recordings</li><li>Links to externally hosted web project</li></ul>
