Demons, Ghosts, and Skeletons in the Closet: Writing What Scares Us

The Open Mouth Literary Center is a community-based poetry center located in Fayetteville, Arkansas. We host a readings, workshops, classes, festivals and retreats featuring poets whose work we love.

Featured poet Leila Chatti will lead participants through a one hour generative workshop on writing what scares us.

Join us on Saturday, October 31st, 2020 from 11:00am-12:00pm CDT for a generative workshop with featured reader Leila Chatti:Demons, Ghosts, and Skeletons in the Closet: Writing What Scares UsThis workshop will focus on strategies to write the scary stuff—our personal demons, our kept secrets, the things that haunt us, and the frightening world we live in. We will read poems by Sharon Olds, Vievee Francis, Jamaal May, and others and use prompts and techniques to begin crafting poems that face fear, engage with it, refuse to look away.**Space is limited to 20 participants.The workshop will take place virtually via Zoom with Otter Live Captions. An ASL interpreter will be present. Access copies of workshop materials will be made available via Google Docs.Register for the virtual workshop by clicking on the "Registration" button on the Eventbrite page, donating any amount you can, and entering the required fields. Her honors include a Pushcart Prize, grants from the Barbara Deming Memorial Fund and the Helene Wurlitzer Foundation, and fellowships from the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, the Wisconsin Institute for Creative Writing, and Cleveland State University, where she was the inaugural Anisfield-Wolf Fellow in Publishing and Writing. She is currently pursuing a PhD in creative writing at the University of Cincinnati, where she is a Provost Fellow. Her poems appear in The New York Times Magazine, Ploughshares, Tin House, American Poetry Review, and elsewhere.
