Learn how to properly calibrate your vineyard sprayer at our hands-on workshop on March 27th from 9 am - 3 pm!

Surry Community College

All-day vineyard sprayer calibration workshop that will be led by Gwen Hoheisel, Washington State University (WSU) extension specialist. She has conducted sprayer assessment studies to help winegrape growers better understand sprayers commercially available in Washington state, nozzle technologies and best management practices. She holds annual sprayer calibration workshops for Washington State winegrape growers and has created Extension material for Washington State University Viticulture Extension Program. This workshop will be interactive with presentations and outdoor sprayer demonstrations. Be prepared to be drive to and from the SBVE Grand Hall and the Teaching Vineyard, as well has being outdoors. Registration will be $25 and includes lunch. Agenda8:30 am – Check-in at the Shelton-Badgett North Carolina Center for Viticulture &amp; Enology (SBVE) Assembly Hall9:00 am - Introductions9:15 am –Viticulture and Enology Program at Surry Community College9:30 am - Sprayer Calibration and OptimizationThe concepts learned in the presentation will be practiced in a hands-on demonstration of two very different sprayers: TurboMist and Cima. We will discuss routine sprayer maintenance, calibration, and other tools needed to properly apply pesticides in the vineyard. We will discuss what happens when these things are not working properly (e.g., product over-application, worker exposure, drift).10:15 - Drive to Surry Community College Teaching Vineyard (2199 Old Rockford Rd., Dobson, 27017)Field demonstrations will be located across South Main Street from the main campus. Take old Rockford Road until the asphalt changes to gravel. You will approach a sign that says, "Surry Cellars Vineyard". Turn left just past the sign and take the gravel road up until you reach the SA building. You'll see the vineyard on your right as you approach the SA building.10:30 Hands on Sprayer Calibration And OptimizationParticipants will work through the 6-steps of calibration and optimization. We will demonstrate checking speed, air direction, and air volume. Lastly, we will show nozzle types (air-induction vs. standard), and influence of pressure on spray deposition and drift.12:00 - Lunch at the SBVE Assembly Hall1:00 – Drive to Teaching Vineyard (2199 Old Rockford Rd., Dobson, 27017)1:15 – Hand on Sprayer Calibration and Optimization: ContinuedParticipants will conduct the last of the 6-steps of calibration and optimization.
