In partnership with the New York chapter of <a href="https://againstapartheid.art/" title="https://againstapartheid.art/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Artists Against Apartheid </a>we will be screening Madeline Anderson’s documentary I AM SOMEBODY (1970). In 1969, black female hospital workers in Charleston, South Carolina went on strike for union recognition and a wage increase, only to find themselves in a confrontation with the state government and the National Guard. The never-before released studio album, performance piece, and installation synthesizes field songs, traditional American music genres such as blues, folk, and country, and the Black cultural canon of literature, film, music, and more in order to provoke conversations and create distinct changes in the way these canons are embraced.
