Mini-Course: How to Teach Reading and Spelling Begins Oct. 26, 2020 7pm

A four-part series will introduce home educators and teachers to key components of reading, and spelling individual words thoughtfully.

<h3><strong>Bring the Science of Reading into the Classroom!</strong></h3><p>The English spelling system makes sense if you know a few key ideas:</p><ul><li>	What language does this word come from historically?</li></ul><ul><li>	How do letters and their sounds match up?</li></ul><ul><li>	Position – where does the sound occur in a word?</li></ul><ul><li>	What is the most probable spelling of a sound?</li></ul><ul><li>	What is the meaning of the word, its prefixes and suffixes?</li></ul><p>These <strong>four</strong> lively sessions will help you become a word detective!</p><h3><strong>Mark your Calendars: </strong></h3><p>Monday, October 26th at 7:00 pm  </p><ul><li>Week 1: The Foundation- explicitly teaching the consonants and vowels </li></ul><p>Monday, November 2nd at 7:00 pm</p><ul><li>Week 2: Making Sense of All Those Spelling Rules</li></ul><p>Monday, November 9th at 7:00 pm</p><ul><li>Week 3: Reading and Spelling Longer Words Thoughtfully</li></ul><p>Monday, November 16th at 7:00 pm  </p><ul><li>Week 4: The Magical History of Words</li></ul><h3><strong>Presented by Sasha Borenstein</strong></h3><p>Sasha Borenstein has been a member of the International Dyslexia Association so long that she is a Golden Oak! She has been a classroom teacher, director of a clinic for children and adults with learning disabilities for 36 years,  and a teacher trainer for 40 years. Her teaching marries the content of how to teach reading, spelling, and writing, with the processes of learning, language, memory, attention, and thinking skills.</p><h3><strong>Cost </strong></h3><p>The cost of this  four-part series is $60 for IDA Members, $80 for non-members.  Proceeds will go to The International Dyslexia Association-Oregon Branch <a href="https://or.dyslexiaida.org/running-the-distance-scholarship/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Running The Distance Student Scholarship Fund</a>.  </p><p>Thank you for your support!</p>
