This workshop explains the differences between various forms of IP such as patents, trade secrets, copyrights and trademarks.


You have an amazing idea. You’ve spent months, or even years, perfecting the concept and/or product. Now you’re ready to bring it to market. How can you protect yourself from competition during these early, critical years? Entrepreneurs must be prepared. The failure to have thoughtfully planned for a new venture may veer sharply away from success to unintended obstacles. This workshop explains the differences between various forms of IP such as patents, trade secrets, copyrights and trademarks. It will also touch on how investors value IP when raising capital. You will learn how to take the necessary steps now to strengthen your rights to your own innovations.

Having worked both as an engineer and as a Patent Examiner, Ed particularly enjoys interacting with inventors to transform highly technical concepts into a legal framework that will offer the most comprehensive possible protection.

Laura S. Lipschutz, Associate AttorneyLaura focuses her practice on trademark counseling, prosecution, clearance, and enforcement as well as copyright enforcement and litigation. Laura also has experience in cyber security, data security, unfair competition and licensing. She serves corporate clients as well as entrepreneurs, artists, and start-up clients in a wide variety of intellectual property matters.

Patrick Griffin, Patent AttorneyPatrick has practiced in varying areas of intellectual property, with a current focus on patent application writing and patent prosecution. He is particularly experienced in freedom to operate opinions, as well as strategic invention development consulting in high technology fields.Patrick cultivated his practical understanding of communicating engineering objectives in common language during undergraduate studies while working as network engineer for a leading petroleum and petrochemical manufacturer, where he designed enterprise and process control network infrastructures.
