An Evening with bryant terry, George McCalman, and Erica Deeman—Sunday Supper at Headlands Center for the Arts

Join us for a special evening at Headlands Center for the Arts featuring James Beard Award–winning chef, author, and current Headlands Graduate Fellow bryant terry in conversation with acclaimed San Francisco–based artist, author, and designer George McCalman, and Headlands Alumni Artist, and Co-founder of Black Space Residency, Erica Deeman. Together, they will reflect on their ever-evolving creative practices, their collaborations—including McCalman’s celebrated design of Terry’s award-winning Black Food—and their visions for how art and visual storytelling can shape culture and community.

The evening will include:

• A seasonal, ingredient-driven dinner co-created by terry and Headlands’ Chef Damon Little, celebrating the flavors and ingredients of the African Diaspora. Sunday Supper starts at 6:30PM.
• A lively conversation on art, storytelling, and cultural imagination between terry and McCalman.
• A book signing featuring terry’s newly edited anthology The Best American Food and Travel Writing 2025, as well as Black Food and Vegetable Kingdom, and Illustrated Black History: Honoring the Iconic and the Unseen, with books sold by Marcus Books, the nation’s oldest Black-owned bookstore.

Tickets are required for dinner. Maximum 4 tickets per order. Dinner will take place in The Mess Hall, on the first floor of Building 944, and is accessible to people with mobility aids. Artist program may take place on upper floors accessible only by stairs.

Featured Artists

bryant terry is a multidisciplinary artist, James Beard and NAACP Image Award–winning chef, publisher, and author of seven books, including the acclaimed Black Food and Vegetable Kingdom. He is the founder and editor-in-chief of 4 Color Books (Penguin Random House), an imprint dedicated to visually stunning works by creatives of color. After completing an MFA in Art Practice at UC Berkeley, terry was awarded a 2025–26 Graduate Fellowship at Headlands Center for the Arts, where his work explores Black foodways, cultural memory, and collective liberation.

George McCalman is an artist, creative director and Co-Principal of McCalman.Co. His background in the editorial world is a foundation of his storytelling, and his fine art practice has reframed his perspective on the importance of design. A culture columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle, McCalman’s first book Illustrated Black History: Honoring the Iconic and the Unseen won the 2023 NAACP Award for Outstanding Literary Work as well as profound accolades by The New Yorker’s Hilton Als, NPR, New York Times, San Francisco Chronicle, Fast Company and many others.

Erica Deeman (b. Nottingham, UK) is a visual artist whose work explores the intersections of race, gender, and the hybridity of Black identity. Deeman is concerned with the multiple ways selfhood manifests through queer, transnational and hybrid modes; and how we find a sense of belonging and ‘home’ through migratory patterns, memory, personal biography, and ancestral legacy. Her multidisciplinary practice embodies the complexity and transformational nature of Blackness. Deeman currently lives in Seattle, WA and works between here and the Bay Area. She received a Bachelor of Arts, Public Relations, degree in 2000 from Leeds Beckett University, Leeds, UK; a Bachelor of Fine Arts, Photography, a degree in 2014 from Academy of Art, San Francisco, CA; and MFA in Art Practice at UC Berkeley, CA in 2022.
