The rate at which African American women are experiencing trauma and navigating symptoms consistent with PTSD is alarming. Research shows that a number of factors contribute to health disparities among this group. However, there are several coping skills and interventions that increase resilience and serve as mediating factors for mental health symptoms. This training offers an opportunity to review, discuss, and analyze trauma risk factors for African American women. It will also present information about specific culture-affirming coping strategies and therapeutic interventions, communication barriers, and therapeutic pitfalls to avoid when working with this specialized group.This workshop meets the MULTICULTURAL requirement for licensure. La Keita Carter, PsyD, LP, LCPC-S completed her masters and doctoral degrees in clinical psychology at Loyola University Maryland. She completed her pre-doctoral internship at Towson University's Counseling Center in Towson, MD. Currently, she holds licenses as a psychologist and clinical professional counselor-supervisor in Maryland. Practicing since 2009, Dr. Carter's therapy specialties are women's issues, trauma and crisis management, addictions, multicultural barriers in treatment, and relationship issues. She also enjoys psychoeducational testing for learning disabilities and learning giftedness and psychological evaluations for employment and surgeries. Her professional specialties include the supervision of budding counselors and psychologists and psychology administration.​She is a sought after presenter on multicultural issues in psychology having presented at the Maryland Psychological Association Annual Conference, Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation (Minnesota), Maryland Behavioral Health Administration, Maryland Department of Health, and Association for Psychology Training Clinics Annual Conference (San Juan, PR). She has also authored three psychology textbooks.
