Rhode Island Genealogical Society Half Day Member Meeting

Each year, the Rhode Island Genealogical Society holds four quarterly member meetings in September, November, January and March, and our Annual Meeting in May. These meetings include workshops and lectures held in person throughout Rhode Island and virtually on Zoom and bring stronger focus to local subjects and/or families concentrated in certain areas of the state. Recordings of meetings and lectures presented to the Society are usually available to RIGS members on our website.

Due to parking limitations, our meeting has been moved to virtual onlyThe next meeting of the Rhode Island Genealogical Society will be held on Saturday, March 22, 2025 from 12 - 4:30 pm virtually on Zoom. The Zoom link to the meeting will be sent out via email to all registered attendees the day before the meeting and again 2 hours prior to start. This half-day meeting will begin at 12:00 pm with online social time and conversation, along with news and announcements. Our speaker, Heather Pouliot Kisilywicz, will begin at 1pm and will speak on the following topics: Ask the Archivist: Caring for your Mini-Museum Are you bursting in binders? Bound up in books? Let’s be honest, we genealogists are a unique kind of hoarder “collector.” We cringed when someone “tossed it all” to clean out a loved-one’s, but how will they know what to save? As a professional archivist, Heather works inlibraries, museums, and archives to determine the historical significance of an item, organize the material, then ensure it is properly stored for long-term preservation. She will share the standards and best practices to ensure the mini-museum in your house is prepared for the future. In this one-hour talk, you’ll learn why she hates paperclips, laughes at white gloves, and leave with the motivation needed to organize, display, and preserve your piles and files properly.Rhode Island's Relationship with Rum Rhode Island's history provides a unique lens to examine how we relate to alcohol today. The colony became a global trade leader in the 1700s thanks to rum. The industrial revolution, started by Slater Mill, resulted in the national discussion of social reform, the temperance movement in response and influx of immigrant textile workers. Rhode Island passed then repealed prohibition of alcohol laws over 50 years before the nation ratified the 18th amendment because of lives lost due to enforcement. Join us for a talk that will explore Rhode Island's conflicted relationship and history with rum, social reform, and rum running. Heather Pouliot Kisilywicz, MLIS is a cultural heritage professional experienced in collections management, research, and education. She is the archivist and reference librarian at Tomaquag Museum, where she stewards processing, cataloging, and long-term preservation. She is the Principal at Ancestor Answers LLC, an investigative genetic genealogical research firm specializing in unidentified human remains, violent crimes, and unknown parentage. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Marketing (’92) and Master’s in Library and Information Science (’22) from the University of Rhode Island. She holds a certificate in Investigative Genealogy from Ramapo College (’24) and the Boston University Genealogy Course (’21). Her engaging presentations and workshops inspire audiences of all ages to use primary sources to make the past relevant to today. She advocates for research best practices and standards, digital preservation, and information literacy. She is a member of the National Genealogical Society (NGS), the Association of Professional Genealogists (APG), and the Rhode Island Genealogical Society (RIGS). She serves as a State RI250th Commissioner and the Department of Education’s Social Studies Advisor. Born and bred in South County, she is a “boy mom” for three young men. She resides in South County with Hugo, the dog. Lily, the cat, chooses to live with her when not eating at the neighbor’s house. Pickleball is her way of overcoming all the hours spent reading and researching. Hybrid and Virtual Meetings are recorded and available to RIGS members on our website.
