Art & Solidarity: The Story of the Lidice Art Collection

The Czech Center New York actively promotes Czechia by showcasing Czech culture, innovations and creativity in the US. Our program includes concerts, screenings, exhibitions, panel discussions, and other events dedicated to a vast range of areas from visual and performing arts, film, literature, and music to architecture, design, fashion, and innovations. Through the story of the Lidice Art Collection, this lecture explores how art preserves memory and fosters solidarity and empathy within collective consciousness. Miloslav Vorlíček, curator and registrar of the collection, will trace its history, highlighting its remarkable holdings—including Uncle Rudi by Gerhard Richter, one of the most renowned artists to emerge from post-war GermanyThe Czech village of Lidice was completely destroyed and its male inhabitants killed by Nazis on 10 June 1942 as an act of revenge in response to the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich. From that day, the Lidice tragedy became a symbol of antifascist solidarity around the globe. After the war, the village was rebuilt for the surviving women and children. Many solidarity campaigns were initiated, the biggest one being called Lidice Shall Live. It was initiated by Sir Barnett Stross and the miners' movement in the United Kingdom. They wanted to support Lidice as a fellow mining region and proposed a reconstruction of the village.This campaign quickly became international. It included the creation of a rose garden and an art collection. They would preserve the memory of the horrible massacre and remind us of solidarity. The Lidice Collection of Fine Arts hosts hundreds of artworks donated by artists from around the world. The German gallerist René Block organized several exhibitions to support Lidice. He donated works by West German artists to the collection, many of whom later became famous. The collection also includes works from artists from socialist and non-aligned countries that are less known to the public. For the Biennale Matter of Art, we have invited two artists, Nikita Kadan and Marta Popivoda to create new works in Lidice. Both artists deal with the way we interpret history, political violence and landscapes, war and struggle. Miloslav Vorlíček (* 1983) is a contemporary art curator, educator, and gallerist. His curatorial work explores themes of etymology, the present, and process. He currently serves as the Curator and Registrar of the Lidice Art Collection at the Lidice Memorial, where he is also the Head of Residencies. Previously, he ran the for-profit curatorial institute lítost gallery in Prague. Miloslav holds a Master's degree in Curating Contemporary Art from the Royal College of Art in London (2014).This event is organized in collaboration with the Polish Cultural Institute New York and the Hungarian Cultural Center New York.
