SDMYCO Hands-on Mushroom Extract & Tincture Workshop with Desert Alchemist

The San Diego Mycological Society was established in 1997. Our members include amateurs, enthusiasts and mycological professionals whose interests in mushrooms include culinary, cultivation, identification, photography, ecology, and more. We share our interests through monthly meetings, topic-specific classes, mushroom forays (collecting), and identification in order to demystify mushrooms and share their knowledge with the public.  San Diego Mycological Society is a nonprofit, educational organization based in Kumeyaay Territory in San Diego, CA dedicated to educating the public about all aspects of mycology.The San Diego Mycological Association established the Microbiology Award for Excellence in Mycology to be awarded to one meritorious graduate student in the Department of Microbiology and Plant Pathology (MPP) at the University of California, Riverside.  All aspects of fungal biology and ecology are encouraged. A faculty committee will identify the applicant that has demonstrated excellence in research and creative forward-thinking in their dissertation research. <h3>Saturday, Feb. 14, 2025</h3><h3>5:00pm-6:30pm Cost: $50</h3> <h3>Includes your own take-home vial of tincture!</h3> <ul><li>LEARN: We'll explain basics of mushroom tinctures and extracts.</li><li>DEMO: We'll go over the instructions and go through the process together.</li><li>DO IT YOURSELF: Filter mushrooms for extract and take a vial home!</li></ul> INSTRUCTOR BIO:Hernan Castro is the owner of Desert Alchemist an Arizona based business. He is a passionate Naturalist, Mycologist &amp; influencer from Arizona. He educates the community on topics like medicinal mushrooms, foraging, cultivation, extraction, ethical harvesting practices, and more. He is specializes in medicinal mycology and the documentation of new species/rare species found in the Sonoran Desert Sky Islands. He leads Identification workshops in the local mountains during the monsoon season. He hosts talks or workshops for the sky island mushroom society and other Mycological groups, as well as educating the global community through his mycology videos on TikTok and Instagram. He began learning about the world of medicinal mushrooms in 2015 when his father had several strokes. Hernan made a lion’s mane extract to support his father’s recovery from paralysis and has been working with medicinal mushroom extracts ever since. His work has been featured on PBS, as well as newspapers and magazines. His company, Desert Alchemist, makes a wide variety of medicinal mushroom/Herbal extracts, coffee, tea, honey, and other mushroom products made with wild fungi. https://desertalchemist.com/
