Drake University - Global Engagement

Drake University is partnering with the University of KwaZulu-Natal to host a virtual conference on equity and inclusion in higher education

Presented by SHRMThe purpose of this conference is to provide an opportunity for faculty, staff and students from around the world to share in their experiences, challenges, and solutions that have shown progress in the area of equity and inclusion.

OVERVIEWGlobally, education is one of the best options for overcoming disparities for groups who have been traditionally marginalized. A 2017 UNESCO report found that 60 million people could escape poverty through more education. Historically, low-income, women, ethnic minorities (ethnic, religion, language, geographical location, age, migration background, refugee status, etc.) and people with disabilities have either been excluded from educational opportunities, been provided with inferior education, or been forced into assimilation education. Drake University (Des Moines, Iowa, USA), in conjunction with our partner institution, University of KwaZulu-Natal (Durban, South Africa), will host a global conference on equity and inclusion in higher education March 2021 to provide an opportunity for universities around the world to share in their experiences, challenges, and solutions that have shown progress in the area of equity and inclusion. Institutions of Higher Education face diversity, equity, and inclusion issues globally with unique challenges and creative solutions. The conference will bring together educators, students, policy makers and citizens from around the world to together explore the struggles, strategies, and solutions for creating a more equitable and inclusive higher education field. Topics discussed at the conference may include a) exploring historical influences of today’s present, b) the role of activism in transformation, c) teaching strategies and the role of research to effect impactful change, d) addressing structures and power relations within institutions. The conference presenters may have an opportunity to submit their research for publication or collaborate on future research.

OBJECTIVES1. Engage in critical dialogue to expand participants’ understanding of global issues of the driving forces and restraining forces surrounding equity and inclusion within higher education: <ul><li>Struggles of historical and present injustices that impede equitable education for all </li></ul><ul><li>Practices which have degraded equity in higher education around the world </li><li>Strategies to address inequity on university campuses </li></ul>2. Participate in collaborative, hands-on sessions to develop relationships with partners in order to: <ul><li>Collect data and stories around equity and inclusion in higher education in a global context </li></ul><ul><li>Create and implement equity and inclusion strategies that work </li></ul><ul><li>Produce cutting edge research in the area of equity and inclusion within higher education </li></ul>3. Explore opportunities for continued collaboration surrounding equity and inclusion in higher education.
