This workshop is designed to enhance participants&#x27; skills in building strong supervisory relationships. A strong working alliance is the sine qua non of successful supervision. Similarly critical is a consistent focus on the contextual and cultural factors of each member of the supervisory triad (supervisor, supervisee, and client). Participants will learn about factors related to the supervisory working alliance and how to attend to critical relational and cultural factors in the process of supervision. Katharine (Katy) Shaffer, Ph.D. is a counseling psychologist and assistant professor at the University of Baltimore whose research involves three broad domains of investigation: clinical supervision, therapy processes and outcomes, and multicultural education and counseling competencies. She has published several articles about the supervisory working alliance and relational behavior in clinical supervision. Dr. Shaffer teaches master’s-level counseling skills, group counseling, multicultural counseling, research and evaluation, professional identity and ethics, and clinical supervision. She is an experienced clinical supervisor who works extensively with students on developing their multicultural awareness, knowledge, and skills. Dr. Shaffer’s experience as a therapist and clinical supervisor has included work in community mental health and several university counseling centers, most recently at the Cook Counseling Center at Virginia Tech University. She is the recipient of the 2017 National Society of Leadership &amp; Success (Sigma Alpha Pi) Award for Excellence in Teaching and the 2019 faculty recipient of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Award at the University of Baltimore for fostering diversity and inclusion in a global community. In her time outside of work, she enjoys distance running, biking, stand-up paddle boarding, sailing, traveling, and snuggling with cats.
