The Cooperative Extension Service is nationwide and was established by the Smith-Lever Act of 1914. It is a partnership between state land grant universities, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the county governments throughout the nation. All of these groups share in the planning, financing, and operation of extension programs. In Florida, the Cooperative Extension Service is administered by the University of Florida.Wakulla County Commissioners provide support for local faculty, staff and facilities. In the Chick Chain Project Club, youth learn how to raise chickens, basic aspects of poultry science &amp; engage in fun hands-on learning!

What is the 4-H Chick Chain Project? 

The 4-H Chick Chain Project teaches you how to raise and care for chickens using research-based methods and practices. 

How does the 4-H Chick Chain Project work? 
Register for the 4-H Chick Chain Project through your 4-H member profile: http://sfyl.ifas.ufl.edu/wakulla/4-h/club-meetings/Purchase or hatch your own chicks from October 1-31, 2020. The number you choose to purchase or hatch is up to you. We recommend that you begin with at least three chicks. 
Chicks must be the following breeds: 
 Americauna/Aracauna 
Delaware 
Leghorn 
Orpington (any variety) 
Plymouth Rock 
Rhode Island Red 
Sussex 
Novelty (any other breed of your choice) 

You’ll raise and care for your chicks for about 21 weeks before the final event. 

 

What will I learn during this project? 

Poultry nutrition and care 

Communication skills 

Record keeping skills 

We’ll provide at least two online educational workshops and one hands-on workshop: 

4-H Chick Chain Orientation and How to Set up a Brooder - recorded 

Poultry Perfection – hands-on 

Getting Ready for the 4-H Chick Chain Show - recorded 

 

How do I register? 

You must be a 4-H member at least 5 years old as of September 1 of the current 4-H year. 

Complete registration in 4-H online from October 1-31. 
A family can share a project. Each youth must complete their own record book and will participate in all competitive categories individually in their age category. 

If you participated in 4-H Chick Chain in 2019-2020, you may register as a returning project. 

Take your registration fee to your 4-H Agent. 
New project: $20 
Returning project: $10 
The final event – 4-H Chick Chain Show 
Saturday, March 20, 2021 – Jackson County Agricultural Center, Marianna, FL 

Breed Judging 
Bring your best two birds of any breed for judging. 
All birds will be grouped and judged by breed. 
Novelty birds will be judged as one group. 
Judges will evaluate your birds from a production (ability to lay eggs) standpoint. 

Showmanship 

Your handling abilities and knowledge is the focus of showmanship. You will interact one-on-one with an experienced poultry judge demonstrating the steps of showmanship, breed knowledge, and general poultry knowledge. Attitude, appearance, speaking ability, care, management skills and willingness to follow instructions are all on stage.
