The Art & History Museums of Maitland (A&H) is a premier cultural destination and community gathering place in Central Florida, about 15 minutes from downtown Orlando. A&H is a group of sophisticated attractions that includes a contemporary art museum, 3 interactive history museums, and a stunning campus recognized as Greater Orlando's only National Historic Landmark. A&H also features a community art school nestled among its beautiful gardens and unique architecture. Founded in 1937 as an artists’ retreat, our space still fulfills this mission today with multiple artist residencies serving both local and international artists. During this artist talk, Curator of Collections Katie Benson will explore the history of modernism and André Smith’s contributions to the movement as an artist, architect, and founder of the Research Studio. The talk situates Smith’s work within the broader context of early 20th-century modernist trends in America and abroad.Admission, to this event is FREE! However, donations of any size are gratefully accepted with your order or at the event, in order to support our many free community programs!For more information about our current exhibition A Return to Espero featuring the unseen art of J. André Smith:A Return to Espero unveils the profound metamorphosis of our founder, J. André Smith, whose near-death experience served as a catalyst for artistic reinvention. This exhibition chronicles the profound personal journey underlying the creation of the avant-garde haven of the Research Studio, known today as the Maitland Art Center. On display for the first time publicly is an intimate collection of personal letters exchanged with his dear friend, philanthropist Mary Curtis Bok, many of which were illustrated by Smith himself. These artifacts along with a wide array of his previously unseen art illuminate themes of resilience, friendship, and the transformative power of artistic expression. Smith and Bok’s correspondence stands as a testament to their shared vision and unwavering commitment to pushing the boundaries of artistic exploration in Florida.
