Dickey’s fresh perspective on everything from house-hunting to embracing wildness offers compelling insights both personal and universal. Challenges abounded, such as how to make the new site—nearly six times larger than the previous garden—less work. Dickey’s solution was to approach gardening with less curation and more appreciation of nature’s sensibilities.

She used native plants to amplify the beauty of untamed meadows and woodland and kept cultivated beds small and manageable. With her characteristic humor and charm, Dickey shares how gardening larger led her to garden smarter.

Page Dickey is a garden designer and author of multiple books, including Gardens in the Spirit of Place, Inside Out, and Embroidered Ground. She lectures around the country about plants and garden design, and has written articles for House and Garden, Architectural Digest, Horticulture, Fine Gardening, and Garden Design. Her former garden, Duck Hill, has been featured in the New York Times, Elle Décor, and Vogue. She now lives and gardens in Falls Village, Connecticut, on 17 acres with a view of the Berkshire hills.

Margaret Roach has been writing about gardening for about 30 years. Margaret was Garden Editor at Newsday and then for Martha Stewart, where she was the first garden editor of Martha Stewart Living and later EVP/Editorial Director of Martha Stewart magazines, books and web. Throughout the garden season of 2020, Martha was called on by “The New York Times” to write a gardening column. For nearly 25 years, her Hudson Valley garden has been open to visiting as part of the Garden Conservancy Open Days program.
