UMASS Amherst Political Economy Workshop

This workshop is a series of seminars by leading political economists from around the world who analyze and discuss the deep global crisis.

Nancy Folbre, University of Masschusetts Amherst, and Dzodzi Tsikata, University of Ghana, will discuss the implications of the COVID-19 pandemic for the care sector in the Global South and North. Nancy Folbre is Professor Emerita of Economics and Director of the Program on Gender and Care Work at the Political Economy Research Institute at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and a Senior Fellow of the Levy Economics Institute at Bard College in the United States. Her research explores the interface between political economy and feminist theory, with a particular emphasis on the value of unpaid care work. She is the author of numerous articles and books. Her latest monograph is The Rise and Decline of Patriarchal Systems (forthcoming in 2021 from Verso). She has also written widely for a popular audience, including contributions to the New York Times Economix blog. Dzodzi Tsikata is Research Professor (development sociology) and has been the Director of the Institute of African Studies (IAS) at the University of Ghana since August 2016. In a career spanning over 27 years, Tsikata’s research has been in the areas of gender and development policies and practices; women’s movements and gender equality activism; the politics and livelihood effects of land tenure reforms, large scale land acquisitions and agricultural commercialisation; and informal labour relations and conditions of work, and she has led research projects on these subjects over the years.The workshop will be hold on zoom and all registered participants will be provided with the relevant zoom link and password by email ahead of the event.The event starts at 4 PM Eastern Standard Time, October 27.The presentation will be followed by a Q+A and discussion with all of you.The event is free.
