DISCUSSION<h3>Black Space/Black Power: Reconstruction + New Urban Forms </h3>How can a contemporary artist approach urban architecture with themes of &quot;Black Power/Black Space&quot;, shape new urban forms? Artist Binta Ayofemi discusses her practice with Joseph Becker, SFMOMA’s Associate Curator of Architecture and Design. Binta&#x27;s GROUND is generating a new discussion of race, architecture, and contemporary art. Binta&#x27;s work addresses voids in the urban landscape as a point of departure.Binta’s art practice is centered on regenerative urban spaces in formerly vacant sites, with major new works in San Francisco and Oakland resonating with Black West legacies throughout San Francisco and West, East, and Downtown Oakland. Inspired by both Black Panthers and Black Shakers, Binta’s works infuse an Afrofuturist narrative with objects gathered, honed, milled and performed.Binta’s first building as artwork, COMMONS transforms a formerly vacant music building in downtown Oakland, into a portal for gathering, sound, and sustenance,opens in 2020. Binta and Joseph will explore the remaking of corner stores, making, manufacturing, performance, and new authorship around public and private space, while reviving a Black Panther legacy of mutual bases in Oakland and San Francisco.

Binta Ayofemi, Visual ArtistBinta creates urban forms inspired by Black abstraction, transforming overlooked urban spaces through sound, movement, and material. Binta works in Oakland and San Francisco inspired by everyday utopian forms. Binta’s first building as artwork, COMMONS opens in Oakland in 2020. Binta shifts accepted narratives around urban voids, seemingly abandoned structures, and economic displacement, while limning notions of fugitivity, freedom, duration, and Black radical imagination. Binta’s new activations of vacant lots and vacant buildings, from an urban meadow to a vacant building, suggest a state of mutability. Her artworks are experiences that mingle the senses, crossing the material and the immaterial. Her newest work includes colored mirrors for urban landscape.Binta’s work has been presented by the Kadist Art Foundation, SFMOMA, Southern Exposure, The Carpenter Center, The Wattis Institute, the Asian Art Museum, The New Museum's New Inc, dOCUMENTA, the British Arts Council, and Chicago's Rebuild FoundatJoseph Becker, Associate Curator of Architecture + Design, SFMOMAJoseph focuses on creating access points to tools, ideas and issues surrounding the intersection of design and art, and the shifts between conceptual and production practice. Since 2007, he's contributed to dozens of exhibitions at SFMOMA and has been responsible for major acquisitions and donations to the collection. Becker has frequently contributed to publications, panels, and juries on art, architecture, and design. He received his BArch and MAAD from the California College of the Arts, where he's a Distinguished Alumni and Visiting Professor.
