A fiscally sponsored 501c(3), PRiA is committed to organizing our community, ensuring that our history is told and our culture and people prosper.  Our goals are to be the central organizer for the Puerto Rican community in Los Angeles, build a direct bridge with the island, and establish a PRiA center in L.A and P.R.

Puerto Ricans In Action

This introductory workshop will teach easy methods to help the audience kickstart their own family research.

This two-hour workshop will include case studies, discussion on family history research challenges, and an explanation of digital tools to help with the genealogy research process. Participants will receive expert tips to kick-start their Puerto Rican family history research. Bring your questions, family photos, heirlooms, and oral stories. She is an alumnus of The Smithsonian Latino Museum Studies Program and has served as a researcher for the Smithsonian Folklife Festival. Melanie organizes the biennial Bomba Research Conferences (8 since 2005 under the banner name of PROPA) in Chicago and Puerto Rico, has provided slang editing for two books of Nuyorican poetry and has six publications to her name. In 2011, she started a Lugares Históricos project which highlighted Black history sites in Puerto Rico. In 2018, Melanie organized and led a first-of-its-kind community tour of these ancestral spaces and in 2019 began placing historical markers at these locations of importance for African diasporic gathering and traditional practices on the Island. She is a state appointed grant reviewer for arts and culture in Florida and is active with different organizations in her local community including serving as a founding board member for Escuela de Bomba y Plena Tata Cepeda in Kissimmee. Melanie has conducted genealogy for more than 20 years and has researched 100s of Puerto Ricans and their families both on the Island and in the Diaspora.Biografía del presentador: Melanie Maldonado es genealogista, artivista e investigadora independiente con formación doctoral en Estudios de Performance. Es ex alumna del Programa de Estudios del Museo Latino del Smithsonian y se ha desempeñado como investigadora del Festival Smithsonian Folklife. Melanie organiza las Conferencias de Investigación de Bomba bienales (8 desde 2005 bajo el nombre de la bandera de PROPA) en Chicago y Puerto Rico, ha proporcionado edición de jerga para dos libros de poesía nuyorican y tiene seis publicaciones a su nombre. En 2011, inició un proyecto Lugares Históricos que destacó los sitios de historia negra en Puerto Rico. En 2018, Melanie organizó y dirigió un recorrido comunitario único en su tipo por estos espacios ancestrales y en 2019 comenzó a colocar marcadores históricos en estos lugares de importancia para las reuniones de la diáspora africana y las prácticas tradicionales en la isla. Ella es una revisora de subvenciones nombrada por el estado para las artes y la cultura en Florida y participa activamente en diferentes organizaciones en su comunidad local, incluida su labor como miembro de la junta fundadora de la Escuela de Bomba y Plena Tata Cepeda en Kissimmee. Melanie ha realizado genealogía durante más de 20 años y ha investigado a cientos de puertorriqueños y sus familias tanto en la Isla como en la Diáspora.
