The National Portrait Gallery in Washington DC is not one of the most-visited Smithsonian museums. But what a mistake! Especially if you are interested in women's history. The NPG has an amazing collection of portrait of fascinating Americans—but in particular, of fascinating, strong, ambitious American women. The collection is strong in the great female reformers that helped to bring about the abolition of slavery, women's suffrage, women's equality (to the extent that we have it); also women artists and writers; and it is unusually strong in women of color.
