Serving the Bay Area for more than a century, theAmerican Institute of Architects, San Francisco Chapter (AIASF)offers professional development and networking opportunities as well as public forums, tours, lectures, and gallery exhibitions that provide architects and design enthusiasts with many opportunities to explore the local built environment.TheCenter for Architecture + Designenhances public appreciation for architecture and design, both locally and internationally, through exhibitions, lectures, tours, films, and other programs that reveal the richness of the design arts. Founded in 2005, the Center for Architecture + Design is a collaborative environment where design organizations and affiliates share not only space, but ideas.

<h3>NEIGHBORHOOD SERIES: The Mission</h3>For decades, the Mission district has been recognized for its influential food and music scene woven with numerous LatinX artistic and cultural institutions that continue the social and cultural renaissance of the late 1960s and early 1970s. Traverse through time with this panel discussion comprised of community activists, artists and storytellers.BIOSModeratorJohn Lum, Principal, John Lum ArchitectureJohn has dedicated his 30+ year career to designing, sustainable, functional, livable spaces that express the distinct design aesthetics of his clients. Rooted in a collaborative and personal process, he balances artistry with efficiency to translate clients’ visions into attainable design solutions. He approaches projects in a direct, realistic manner, analyzing the physical and psychological contexts to create inspiring spaces. He has grown the firm from a residential studio into a bustling practice that designs affordable housing, multifamily housing (SRO and micro-units), retail, hospitality and education. He continues to evolve his work by bridging the demands of sustainable solutions, financial considerations, social purpose, and personal expression.SpeakersPatricia Algara, ASLA, BASE Landscape ArchitecturePatricia was born and raised in Mexico and is the founder and president of BASE Landscape Architecture. BASE is located in the Mission district and where Patricia lived for many years. She is a board member of the Mission Dolores Neighborhood Association and through her practice she has worked on several projects in the Mission. A recognized leader in sustainable design and community involvement, Patricia creates landscapes that immerse people of all backgrounds and abilities in learning, exploration and play. Patricia’s community involvement and advocacy expand the boundaries of traditional landscape architecture. She founded an NGO "With Honey in the Heart" that creates healthy habitats for pollinators. One of the demonstration gardens, the Pollinator Blvd. is located in the Mission district on the Dolores median. She has lectured at many universities and has won two national faculty ASLA awards. She received her MLA from UC Berkeley in 2007.Erick Arguello, Calle 24 Erick is a Founder and President of Calle 24 Latino Cultural District. He works for GLIDE as the Community Engagement Manager under the Center for Social Justice. He was born in Nicaragua and raised in San Francisco’s Mission District. Graduate of Mission High School and raised in a small business family he has volunteered as a community advocate for the last 25 years in the Mission. He is the recipient of the KQED Latino Heritage Month Local Hero Award 2011, 2014 Cesar E. Chavez Legacy Award, San Francisco Latino Heritage Award 2014, LGBT Individual Community Grand Marshall 2008, and the Instituto Familiar De La Raza, Ollin Rodrigo Reyes Award 2003. Miranda Bergman, Contemporary MuralistMiranda Bergman is a veteran of the community mural movement, transforming urban space by painting in the streets for over 40 years. She loves how murals weave together the bright strands of artistry and social activism. A seasoned educator, she teaches visual arts and muralism to many constituencies. She taught K-8 art in Oakland Public Schools for many years, believing passionately in quality arts education for every child. Her murals stretch from various sites in the United States, to Mexico, Central America, and Palestine. They include Maestrapeace, the acclaimed mural on the San Francisco Women’s Building. Her artwork and essays have been published in over 50 books, and she appears in several films. In addition to her collaborative work, she creates paintings, drawings, sculptures, and mixed media works. Naomi Helena Quiñonez, poet, educator and activistNaomi is the author of three collections of poetry, Hummingbird Dream/Sueño de Colibri, The Smoking Mirror and Exiled Moon. She is editor of Invocation L.A: Urban Multicultural Poetry, which won the American Book Award and Decolonial Voices. Naomi is active in curating and participating in Bay Area literary events and programs and is currently curating literary fundraising events for border refugees. She offers poetry workshops in California including writing and healing workshops for women of color. Naomi holds a PhD in American History and Cultural Studies. Some of the publications in which her work appears include Maestrapeace; 2019, Voices of Our Ancestors; 2019, the Colorado Review, Infinite Divisions, Mascaras and From Totems to Hip Hop. She is a recent recipient of the City of Berkeley Lifetime Achievement Award in Poetry (2017), a Rockefeller Fellowship, the American Book Award and a California Arts Grant. Quiñonez is featured in Notable Hispanic Women, and in the Dictionary of Literary Biography.

About the Architecture + the City Festival (September 11-30)Co-presented by AIA San Francisco and the Center for Architecture + Design, the 17th annual Architecture + the City goes virtual and will continue to offer behind-the-scenes programs, walking tours, literature, live presentations and more that provide an excellent opportunity for all communities to experience architecture and design in a myriad of ways throughout the city. Every September, the festival reveals the many facets and layers of San Francisco, and how ­architecture and design play a key role in this ever-changing urban landscape.
