Each year, as a part ofCity Awake, theGreater Boston Chamber of Commerce's young professional network, we host the annualFierce Urgency of Nowfestival in partnership with organizations throughout the Greater Boston region. The festival draws thousands of attendees across five days with over 35 events highlighting the challenges and experience of young professionals of color.F.U.N. encourages our  community to share what steps their company or industry is taking to improve the experience of young professionals of color in Greater Boston. Through our programming we also continue to highlight Boston’s diverse neighborhoods, voices, organizations, and perspectives through social, cultural, civic, and community events.

The “Entrepreneurial Generation” is entering the workforce looking for fulfilling careers, not the typical 9 to 5. Thousands of young professionals have started ‘side hustles’ during their corporate careers and have either pursued their entrepreneurial journey full-time or decided to keep it on the side. The pandemic has led young professionals to pursue side hustles because they have lost their jobs, have more time to start a business, or want to do something to help the greater good. Likewise, young professionals are looking for ways they can be innovative and intrapreneurial within their company in order to expand their organizations’ reach, purpose, mission, or culture. During this conversation, we’ll hear from leaders who have pursued their entrepreneurial journey full-time, have decided to keep it on the side, or have encouraged their workforce to think outside the box. With the future of work changing and Millennial and Gen Z’s becoming the largest workforces in history, entrepreneurial thinking isn’t going anywhere, so how can companies support their next generation workers to think innovatively, pursue their side hustles, and strengthen our business and civic communities? Join us September 4-8 to help make Boston more inclusive for all. Why are you involved in F.U.N.?With half of the workforce in Boston being classified as millennials, and nearly half of millennials in Greater Boston being people of color, we know that the business community must play a key role in improving the city’s image and increasing access and opportunities to attract and retain talent. Retention of young people of color is of critical importance to our future as a region. Who hosts Fierce Urgency of Now? City Awake, the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce's young professional network, partners with businesses (large and small) across the Greater Boston region to host a series of events throughout the weekend. Each event host is responsible for all logistics of their event. Typically, this is a decentralized festival held at locations across the city. This year, due to COVID-19, we have transformed the festival into an entirely virtual experience. Why is it called Fierce Urgency of Now or F.U.N.? The festival’s title is inspired by a famous Dr. Martin Luther King phrase, used in several of his speeches. In his “I Have a Dream” he states: “We have also come to this hallowed spot to remind America of the fierce urgency of now. This is no time…to take the tranquilizing drug of gradualism.”Who is the target audience? F.U.N.'s target audience is anyone who wants to be involved in shaping our region to be more inclusive for everyone. The events specifically focus on providing tools, resources, and access to young professionals of color who are looking to deepen their connection to the city of Boston. The festival is also for white young professionals who want to take action and CEOs and senior leaders of all backgrounds who want to work directly with the next generation of leaders to improve their companies and the city.
