Serving the Bay Area for more than a century, theAmerican Institute of Architects, San Francisco Chapter (AIASF)offers professional development and networking opportunities as well as public forums, tours, lectures, and gallery exhibitions that provide architects and design enthusiasts with many opportunities to explore the local built environment.TheCenter for Architecture + Designenhances public appreciation for architecture and design, both locally and internationally, through exhibitions, lectures, tours, films, and other programs that reveal the richness of the design arts. Founded in 2005, the Center for Architecture + Design is a collaborative environment where design organizations and affiliates share not only space, but ideas.

Probe not only into architecture created by animals, but the parallels that can be found in the world's vernacular architecture.

<aside>DISCUSSION</aside>Pragmatism: Architecture in NatureSublime beauty is often found in the simplest of relationships, when form doesn’t just follow function, but becomes it. Nowhere is the gap between form and function more narrow than in the architecture of animals, and for centuries humanity has sought to find solutions as pragmatic and elegant as those found in nature. Whether the tensile strength of a spider’s web or the earthen density of a termites mound, animals sculpt stunning structures using basic materials and unmatched logic. In this program we will explore not only the architecture created by animals, but the parallels that can be found in vernacular architecture around the world. These parallels shed light on paths forward and how we might understand more clearly our place in the natural world. <aside>Image Credit: Sharon Beals</aside>

Corey and India Akers are a husband and wife duo who find their seemingly disparate professional lives parallel and enhance one another in a variety of interesting ways. Both Corey and India grew up in rural Virginia, where the landscape and the pragmatic structures situated upon it, inspired their respective career paths. India has built her career as an environmental educator and naturalist presenting public programs on a wide array of topics. Currently, India serves as the Program Director for Sarah’s Science, a Bay Area after school science enrichment program that teaches complex science topics to children through building toys. Since graduating from Virginia Tech’s College of Architecture and Urban Studies in 2012, Corey curated a boutique art gallery in Lexington, Virginia before relocating to San Francisco where he works for Gast Architects as an Architectural Designer. Corey and India share a common interest in the relationship between natural and built environments, believing that elegant solutions to modern problems can be found in nature and in vernacular architecture around the world.

About the Architecture + the City Festival (September 11-30)Co-presented by AIA San Francisco and the Center for Architecture + Design, the 17th annual Architecture + the City goes virtual and will continue to offer behind-the-scenes programs, walking tours, literature, live presentations and more that provide an excellent opportunity for all communities to experience architecture and design in a myriad of ways throughout the city.
