Five ancient writers mention this list, Antipater of Sidon and Philo of Byzantium among them. For the most part they agree that the Seven Ancient Wonders were the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, the Statue of Zeus at Olympia, the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, the Colossus of Rhodes, and the Lighthouse of Alexandria. For this lecture we will not only discuss who chose these Seven Wonders and why, but we will investigate their overall importance, especially focusing upon the archeological evidence that remains of these sites today. How can archaeology unlock the secrets of these lost treasures?
