Pidgin Palace Chats: The Public Health Crisis within Indigenous Communities

Join us for a discussion on the destruction of the Navajo Nation at the hands of COVID-19.

One of the many eye-opening works hanging in Pidgin Palace Arts' debut exhibit is "Hanta", a depiction of the community most affected by Hanta virus in 1993. The novel virus killed 13 people, all of whom came into contact with aerosolized deer mouse droppings. In total, 26 people were infected. 14 of them - the majority - were members of the Navajo Nation.The people of the Navajo Nation have long been set up for failure in the face of public health crises. At the hands of the United States government, they have lost their land, their political autonomy, their economic security. They lack access to adequate hospitals, to clean, running water and reliable electricity, to basic healthcare and infrastructural systems that could allow them to fight against the threat of virus. The result has not only been the disproportionate rate of Hanta infection amongst Navajo people, but also the severe rates of infection and death taking hold of their communities throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. In recognition of the immense impact COVID-19 has had on the Navajo Nation, all proceeds from this print will be donated to the Navajo Nation Covid-19 Relief Fund.  Additionally, we invite you to join our virtual event on Wednesday, August 12th at 4pm MST, during which we will host an open conversation on the nation’s struggle against not only the coronavirus, but also the systemic decimation of indigenous communities all across the country.
