The Truth About Pornography (Online Training, Dec 4)

Dr. Emily Rothman has more than 20 years of experience as an adolescent health researcher, with specific experience conducting qualitative and quantitative research on pornography use by adolescents. She has taught graduate-level courses on pornography at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Boston University. She has received federal funding for her research on teen dating violence and sexual assault from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Institute of Justice (NIJ), and other grants from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and the U.S. Department of Defense. She has taught classes to teenagers on the autism spectrum on healthy relationships, facilitated court-mandated groups for men who have been convicted of intimate partner violence, and interviewed children who have been commercially sexually exploited as part of an evaluation on a service program for human trafficking survivors. Nicole served as Program Director of the Start Strong: Building Healthy Teen Relationships Initiative and Men’s Health Crew at the Boston Public Health Commission (BPHC). Most recently she worked for the One Love Foundation as their Senior Director for Evaluation and Engagement creating content to help promote healthy relationships among teens and young adults. Her work has been featured in the Boston Globe and The New York Times. Nicole has a passion for supporting young people in being change agents in addressing issues in their communities. She holds a BA from Wesleyan University and an MPH from Boston University School of Public Health.

You are buying a ticket to a Zoom training for educators about how to use The Truth About Pornography Curriculum. The Truth About Pornography Curriculum is an evidence-informed 9-session workshop conversation to engage teens in critical thinking about pornography. It is neither pro-pornography nor anti-pornography. We use scientific evidence about sexually explicit media, and sexual and dating violence, to engage youth in conversations about consent, respect and healthy relationships. The curriculum was developed by two youth educators with experience and training in public health promotion and a doctoral-level dating violence researcher.The curriculum does not presume that youth have viewed pornography and no pornography is shown during the training. Instead, the topic of pornography—which so many youth find funny, new, and interesting to talk about—is used as a vehicle for raising related topics including: sexual consent, healthy dating and respectful relationships, expectations about male/female roles in sex and relationships (i.e, &quot;gender norms&quot;), the unacceptability of violence in relationships, unhealthy attitudes that encourage body dissatisfaction, the potential for commercial sexual exploitation, and that choosing to work in pornography is not typically a quick or easy way to become rich or a celebrity. Rather than focus exclusively on telling youth what not to do, the curriculum highlights the importance of healthy, respectful dating and sexual relationships. The training prepares teachers, sex educators and others to use the curriculum to teach the 9-session class to youth ages 14-19 years old. Educators can use what they learn to adapt the material for older youth as well. Training participants receive a FREE hard copy of the curriculum. We will mail it to you, also at no cost.
