The National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Inc.(NCBW) is a national, non-profit, volunteer organization for African American women. Its members address common issues in their communities, families and personal lives in the areas of Health, Education, Economic Empowerment, and Public Policy while also promoting gender and racial equity, primarily on behalf of Black women and girls.The New Haven Metropolitan Chapter of NCBW is a 501(c)3 organization that fosters the vision and mission of the national organization in the New Haven and Bridgeport county areas of Connecticut by hosting and sponsoring various events throughout the year that help bring change within our community.

Join us for a virtual screening and discussion of the movie, Rigged: The Voter Suppression Playbook!

The National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Inc. -New Haven Metropolitan Chapter will be hosting a virtual film screening and discussion of the movie, RIGGED: The Voter Suppression Playbook as part of a two-part series for our Advocacy in Action: Amplify the Vote Initiative. RIGGED: The Voter Suppression Playbook takes a rigorous look at voter suppression and sparks spirited discussion on the actions needed to protect our democracy. This award-winning documentary was shot principally during the 2016 election. The film tracks a systematic, decade-long effort to suppress votes at scale and reverse the growing demographic tide of non-white and younger voters who helped elect President Barack Obama in 2008. Using cinema verite, Rigged details a variety of mendacious voter suppression “plays,” or tactics, ranging from the purging of voting rolls and passing of new, restrictive voter ID laws to gerrymandering and voter intimidation. It is narrated by Emmy &amp; Tony award-winning actor, Jeffrey Wright. (70 minutes)Immediately following the film, we will be hosting a Q&A with one of the film's executive producers, Timothy Smith.

Mr. Smith is a veteran of both television and documentary production, having been a production executive with MSNBC, Unapix Entertainment, Newsweek Productions and now, the American Issues Initiative. For the American Issues Initiative, he is the executive producer on its new theatrical documentary, Rigged: The Voter Suppression Playbook.At MSNBC, he was a senior producer with MSNBC’s Long Form (documentary) unit. There, he has executive produced documentaries and series with Lester Holt, Chuck Todd, Rachel Maddow, Norah O’Donnell, Chris Hayes and Chris Matthews. He also headed up Long Form’s co-production efforts – working with Canadian and British production companies and broadcasters including: BBC, CBC, Channel 4 and 5.While a vice president at Unapix, and then Newsweek Productions, Mr. Smith produced non-fiction series for TLC, History Channel, CNBC, MSNBC, National Geographic Channel, AMC and PBS, for which he produced programs for NOVA and Frontline.Mr. Smith’s work has won two Emmys and five Emmys nominations, two Gracie Awards, a Grierson as well as Cable Ace and Genesis Award nominations. Two of his documentaries became television movies for HBO and ABC.His programs and series have been supported by prestigious grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, Sloan Foundation, Kauffman Foundation, JGS Foundation, Annenberg Foundation, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and Corporation for Public Broadcasting.He has written articles for The Washington Post, The Nation, Christian Science Monitor, Talking Points Memo and Brown Alumni Monthly. He received his B.A. with honors from Brown University and a masters from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. He lives with his family in Wilton, CT.
