COVID-19's Impact on Refugee & Conflict-Affected Girls' Education

Thank you for your patience!Hosted by Girl Up Edinburgh, UK and Paper AirplanesBeginning with a discussion on the importance of educating conflict affected girls the panel will illustrate pre-pandemic challenges in their academic experiences. Then the panel will investigate how COVID-19 has uncovered new and exacerbated pre-existing issues. The panel will then shift to a conversation about how individuals, civil society, and national and international government agencies can help provide education during times of emergencies. As the global refugee crisis worsens and a chaotic future unfolds, the panel will culminate with a discussion about the future of education for conflict affected individuals.Panelists:Andrea Fahed graduated in Psychology and Special Education at the American University of Beirut, Lebanon. She did an internship at War Child Holland in the Education department. She also loves and teaches dance and is an environmental activist. She explores new alternative educational methodologies and encourages children to discover themselves through games and art. She is currently working as an Education Officer at Lebanese Alternative Learning, an NGO aiming to design and develop digital content to support Lebanese vulnerable communities as well as Syrian refugees. She really hopes to teach young children to love and seek knowledge through interactive content.Lebanese Alternative LearningLAL is an edTech NGO that aims to bridge the gaps between privileged and underprivileged access to education through its main project, Tabshoura. Tabshoura is a free multilingual e-platform which offers digital support programs in Arabic, English, and French. This online platform is accompanied with its offline solution, Tabshoura in a box. Moderator: Myuri Komaragiri works at the Centre for Critical Development Studies (CCDS) at University of Toronto Scarborough where she helps coordinate the International Development Studies co-op program. She was the Youth Exchange Program Manager at Paper Airplanes Inc., which facilitates english tutoring for conflict-affected adolescents, and is now a member of Paper Airplanes’s advisory board. She has taught and supported education access projects in Guatemala, Morocco and Jordan. She has an MA in Education and International Development from UCL’s Institute of Education, and will begin a PhD in Higher Education at the University of Toronto in Fall 2020.------Spanish: Comenzando con una discusiòn sobre la importancia de educar niñas que se han visto afectadas por el conflicto, el panel ilustrarà los desafìos pre-pandemia en sus experiencias acadèmicas. Luego, el panel investigarà cómo el COVID-19 ha descubierto nuevos y exacerbado problemas pre-existentes. El panel despuès migrará hacia una conversación sobre cómo individuos/as, la sociedad civil y organizaciones gubernamentales nacionales e internacionales pueden ayudar a proveer la educaciòn durante tiempos de emergencia. Mientras la crisis global de refugiados/as empeora y un futuro caòtico se abre, el panel culminará con una discusión sobre el futuro de la educación para personas afectadas por conflictos. Graduada en psicologìa y educación especial en la Universidad Americana de Beirut, Lìbano. Andrea hizo una pasantía con War Child Holland en el departamento de Educación. Ama el baile y lo instruye además de ser una activista ambiental. Además, explora nuevos mètodos educativos e incentiva a la niñez a descubrir sus propios seres por medio de los juegos y el arte. Actualmente trabaja como funcionaria de educación el Lebanese Alternative Learning (Aprendizaje Alternativo Libanés), una organización no gubernamental que le apunta al diseño y desarrollo de contenido digital para apoyar comunidades vulnerables en el Líbano así como refugiados/as Sirios. Espera realmente enseñar a las juventudes a amar y buscar el conocimiento a través de contenido interactivo.
