<h4>The EX LIBRIS program series from the Providence Athenæum features an array of humanities scholars, authors, historians, and thought leaders, illuminating fascinating topics and inspiring the intellectually curious. EX LIBRIS programs take place at the Athenæum in front of a live studio audience and are simulcast via Zoom, as well as recorded.</h4><h4>This is the IN-PERSON event. Featuring ancient mariners' maps, literature, works of art, and natural history specimens, this exhibit explores the allure of serpents, krakens, and other monsters of the deep. Peer into the minds of scholars from centuries past, and study sea creatures whose real lives are often more astonishing than the fantastical beings we might have imagined. Join us in unraveling the mysteries of the deep sea and the human psyche, where sea monsters—both real and imagined—beckon us to explore the unknown.-Peter Girguis is a Professor of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology at Harvard University. He earned his B.Sc. from UCLA and his Ph.D. from UC Santa Barbara. He was also a David Packard Postdoctoral Fellow at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute. He joined Harvard University in 2005, where he now resides as a Full Professor and the Co-Director of the Harvard Microbial Sciences Initiative. He is also an adjunct scientist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution’s Applied Ocean Physics and Engineering group.
