Teaching the Holocaust, Empowering Students : An Educator Workshop

THE AMERICAN VISIONARY ART MUSEUM (AVAM)is America's official national museum and education center for self-taught, intuitive artistry. Since its opening in 1995, the museum has sought to promote the recognition of intuitive, self-reliant, creative contribution as both an important historic and essential living piece of treasured human legacy. The one-of-a-kind American Visionary Art Museum is located on a 1.1 acre wonderland campus at 800 Key Highway, Baltimore Inner Harbor. Three renovated historic industrial buildings house wonders created by farmers, housewives, mechanics, retired folk, the disabled, the homeless, as well as the occasional neurosurgeon—all inspired by the fire within. From carved roots to embroidered rags, tattoos to toothpicks, the visionary transforms dreams, loss, hopes, and ideals into powerful works of art.

Join Echoes and Reflections, Art and Remembrance and AVAM for a 2 day, virtual, educator program.

AVAM is honored to host both Art and Remembrance, and Echoes and Reflections to discuss, share methods to teach, and approach the history of the Holocaust through their unique perspectives and source materials. Open to educators and interested individuals of the public. Two days of programming on Zoom:Wednesday July 29th 9am-noon and Thursday July 30th 9am-noonFrom Echoes and Reflections:&quot;How do we create impactful and thoughtful learning of the Holocaust with students? Through our signature professional development program, participants explore and gain access to a range of classroom content and consider instructional enhancements to support students&#x27; study and reflection of the history of the Holocaust and its ongoing meaning in the world today. Educators enhance their own knowledge about the Holocaust, including the history of antisemitism, and build confidence and capacity to teach this complex subject.&quot;From Art &amp; Remembrance:&quot;Art &amp; Remembrance will share with educators how to use art as a primary resource along with testimony and other stories that took place at the period of time. The lessons and array of resources shared will allow educators to discover ways to use the art and story of Holocaust survivor Esther Nisenthal Krinitz in their learning communities.This interactive two-day workshop is open to all educators and community leaders who are interested in trauma-informed teaching and learning.
