<h3>Summary</h3>Subject(s): Introduction to Usul al-Fiqh, the science of derivation of Islamic law; its terms &amp; concepts; how the science emerged; the vital role it plays in the individual and sociopolitical sphere.Time Allotment: 2 hours per week for 19 weeksCourse will run August 2nd - December 6th on Sundays at 10:00am - 12:00pm PST &amp; will be conducted on Zoom. Relevant class discussions/readings will be found on Google Classroom.Course DescriptionContextAs the controversy around the sharīʿah continues to brew, a discourse of its inner-workings is noticeably absent. Enter uṣūl al-fiqh. Usually, termed as philosophy or legal theory of Islamic law, uṣūl al-fiqh covers a wide range of subject-matter that historically has afforded the rhyme and reason behind the notion of Islam as a complete way of life, and more specifically, forged the indelible link between a Muslim and their Creator. It is no surprise then that the decline of uṣūl al-fiqh corresponds to what some have called the “alienation” of Muslim life whereby Muslims have experienced a collective identity crisis; not knowing who they are, what they stand for, and what their purpose is. Join us for this 19-week course where we will explore the landscape of uṣūl al-fiqh as well as its inner-workings.Course Objectives<ol><li>To establish a foundational literacy of the landscape of uṣūl al-fiqh by providing an overview of its subject-matter and relevant areas of study such as its emergence &amp; development.</li><li>To understand the role uṣūl al-fiqh plays in the practical spheres of the Muslim &amp; the Ummah at large from worship, economy, politcs, social interactions, and more.</li><li>To engender an appreciation and interest that will progressively lead to a greater level of voluntary commitment to the sharīʿah and uṣūl and a sustained engagement in the study of its subject-matter.</li></ol>
